looking for a detecting partner in the Los Angeles area

Hello everyone.

I am retired and looking to find a detecting/prospecting buddy for local day trips. I currently own a Whites MXT, which I am most familiar with, and a Minelab XTerra 70, a detector I would like to become more proficient with, mainly so I can teach my wife to use it. If anyone reading this would like to do a little prospecting or detecting, please contact me and lets see what we can work out.

thanks,

Mike

Mike,
I have very limited time, and my schedule constantly changes; however, I detect in the San Gabriel Canyon, and know of plenty of places in the San Gabriel Range, and I know many detectorists in /NorCal and SoCal. I can point out great spots to detect-from old mining sites, to large numbers of abandoned cabins. You'll certainly get a ton of trash, but you will also find coins, and in the right spot, even gold. It'll just take patience and a lot of swing-time. I can provide detailed driving directions to all the sites, which are all very easily assessed from the road. You'd be amazed at the plethora of hidden spots right by the road. I have photos of many sites too (modern and 100+ yrs old). It's very useful to see an old photo to help you choose the best spot to detect.

Hello Mobius

First off, thanks for the response. You sound well versed in detecting and very knowledgeable about the area. It would be a pleasure to hook up with you on an outing or two if you ever have time. My wife and I are both GPAA members, relatively new to detecting, but we have been interested in prospecting for may years. We have been to the San Gabriel river once several years ago on a Sunday. I tried the MXT detector but found nothing in 3 hours of searching, so we spent the rest of the day digging. sluicing and panning. In the ten hours we spent there we only found a couple of very tiny flakes, but witnessed lots of intense partying by non-prospecting individuals. We were also discouraged by the amount of broken bottles, rubbish, trash, and some pretty unruly behavior, so we had not gone back.

Tomorrow, my wife and I are joining the Keen Engineering group out at Benson Canyon on one of their monthly outings. It will be our first time going with them and our first time detecting in the desert. We hope to gain a little experience and perhaps meet some others that are interested in the same. By any chance are you going?

If you would care to send me an email, I will send you our phone number and perhaps we can get together one evening or on an outing somewhere. My email address is: mplesh@propmakers.com

hope to meet up with you one of these days,

cheers,

mike
