I have the Tesoro Silver umax and have heard it's just about as deep as the Cibola-a detector I had considered-and the Tejon, with the Vaq. maybe a little deeper. I just wanna go about 8"-that's a TRUE 8". Is there one out there for around $500? Or would I be happy with just getting the 12 X 10" I have heard so much about?
That's what I'm thinking-and it will save big bucks--and I already know what the Silver will do with the brown coil. I'm getting info that seems to say that Tesoros all have about the same depth.
big box eldorado with widescan original coil. i have one and its a deep machine with the 10 turn pot. manual ground balance. i will be pitting it against a Compass xp350 this coming week when able to hunt. just setting it up right is the key. and yes i keep a manual copy in my bag, cause i forget sometimes. it s kinda simple but i make sure. i disc very little, i use a buffaloe nickle, bury it 3-4 inches and make sure it hits it solid. then it goes real deep. Ga soil can be bad. so i check a known target in the soil i hunt. i get results. in sand of freshwater beach it is incredible. pulltabs drive you nuts.
slingshot, The Silver is a fantastic coin hunter with good depth and excellent discrimination. Depending on the type of sites you hunt the 10x12 coil might be the way to go. Another option for your Silver and stock coil would be to look for a Depth Master Plus amplifier. I put one on my Silver and can tell
you it was impressive to say the least. With the amp signals that would normally be whispers are loud hard hits. If you can find one of the Depth Master Plus amps they usually run 40 bucks or so used, but they aren't being made any more. This particular amp will work on any Tesoro that doesn't have a
volume control....it is built into the amp. I think with this amp you should be able to hit a dime at 8 inches easy with a strong signal. The only issue is mounting the amp since the control box of the Silver is so small, but I'm sure you can overcome that easily with a little tinkering.
If you decide to buy another detector I can honestly say I am tickled to death with my new Vaquero. If I had known just how good this detector was I would have bought one years ago. The depth is awesome and it weighs the same as the Silver. I pulled 4 v nickels, a buffalo nickel, and a mercury dime
out of an old picnic grove that we have hunted hard for many years. You won't go wrong with a Vaquero. I'm including a pic of my Depth Master Plus so you will know what to look for if you decide to try to find one. HH......
Hi Joe, Dixiedigger, I have used my DMPlus off and on several different machines since it first came out. It is a winner for sure, but dont think it will compete with the V, C, or the Tejon as much as we would like when needing to use a smaller coil. Your Vac is a depth hawg for sure and the deepest coin I ever saw dug was when I watched my digging Buddy dig a carved thin 1800's dime 'Love token" with his Vac..It shocked me how deep it was! As for the DMPlus. I would not part with mine ! I use the sticky type strips of Vel Cro to hold it on the box and it works just great even in the bushes if you are a little careful.Sold for $89 or so new, if I remember correctly and has been worth every dime! HH Charlie

Thanks. I have really read a lot about the Vaq and have been trying to decide between the coil, the Vaq, or the C and "power ground balancing" it for my area. I've just read so many posts that say they"re not that much deeper than the Silver. I wish there was a die-hard user that has used one of the two and the Silver to give an honest review. I would like to think the Cibola could work.
slingshot, I have owned the Silver, a Cibola, Deleon, Cortes, Vaquero, Bandido, and a Golden Saber and of them all, the Vaquero is the deepest by a good margin. I had the 10x12 coil on my Silver and it did add a few inches depth to the detector, but it sucked in a trashy area. If you hunt farm fields only then the 10x12 coil would be the answer, but in a trash laden park it is frustrating hunting with the big coil. The Cibola I had wasn't much deeper than the Silver, but the Vaquero will kick ass and take names. HH........
Hi Slingshot. It would be very important for you to understand that one huge drawback of the Cibola, and many don't realize this until they use it, is that it is set up up so it is so quiet in the iron/ trashy places. That of course is not good for those that want to know what they are swinging over from time to time, or for finding those old house places. For some that is no problem, and the Cibola is a great machine, but having GB on the T and V and being able to tune in to your dirt when you want to makes a world of difference for some folks.. Well I'm not up on the Tesoro's but at that depth ID meters at not that great, but if you want deep and don't care about a meter then I'm thinking a Fisher 1266X or the fisher 1270X. I'm going to say that one of those could be found (used) for around $400.00 or one a little MORE used for a little less.
IMHO, the Cibola would be out of the picture due to the preset ground balance. In fact, again IMHO, regardless of the coil used, the lack of a manual ground balance on your Silver is also a limiting factor on depth, especially in areas with more mineralization. That said, if this were my decision I'd look hard at either the Vaquero or the Tejon and a large coil in addition to the standard and if you hunt trashy parks, fair grounds, etc. I'd also plan on adding a smaller coil for those areas. My two bits.
