Looking down at the beach

I see a guy come hunting the water line. As he got closer I noticed he's got his coil on backwards. I was going to run down and tell him he should walk backwards. But I thought I'd ask you guys if theres any good reason for doing this?

I think its a balance issue or preference. I've seen this as well, just never bothered to ask.

I think the backwards coil will find the upside down rings better. Or is it the inside out rings?

The reason he is doing this ,is because he is a " Newbie " and doesn't know better ,help him out if you can !!

While I think Junklord in probably correct and this is a newby error, it might not be. If the coil is large and heavy running it backward will bring the center of gravity in and implove nte balance just a mudpuppy stated above.
I know many detectorists, including me, run the Tesoro Clean Sweep (18" by 3.6") reversed, for this reason.

Yeah, I never really thought of it before so I just tried it really quick on my Sovereign. It actually does improve balance a tiny bit, but I'm not sure if it's enough to make up for how dumb it looks.

If you want your detector to Balance better , buy a Straight shaft ,it work great. Don't put your coil on backward and look like someone that doesn't look like he knows what going on !!!

As if we dont look dumb enough already.:heh:..I doubt theres any way a guy can look "cool" with this sport...thats why its best to go at night, or when nobody can see you...Of course its not bad to look poor, or maybe even poor and dumb, perhaps some one will take pity on you and give you a dollar!

I really don't care what people think when they see me detecting, in fact i meet so many new friends by swinging the MD I run with my coil backwards on my BHID and V3i. I have straight shafts on my BHID and Excal2 and still like it better backwards.

And your right. If it works for you it works period. Itr might be what worked for him also, will never know. When I see others detecting I make it a point to talk to them. I also show them my finds if they ask. I have met other detectorist that won't tell you a thing. One couple is so secretive they won't say a word. To each their own. I guess they think if you think they are not finding anything, you won't waste your time? LOL who knows. I am not gods gift to detecting and I know I will never get it all. Thats one reason I don't mind helping others. I get my share thats for sure.

Sorry if that movie didn't work, its kind of funny. I just noticed at work that it has to be downloaded to play. But if anyone wants to see it, its a detectorist making a nusance of himself on a beach.

A hunter In Ft. Myers Beach ,Fl . Was robbed and kill by hunting at Night a few years ago . Ok who wants to hunt in the dark ??

I would never hunt at night--this world is a bad place at times so why add the risk of walking in the dark with headphones on. Unless you hunt with others and i still would worry.

I can understand the trepidation..its a matter of timing...I hunt what I call the "dead hours" 3:30am to sunup. Nobody out but cops. All the bad guys have crawled back in their holes for the most part, I wear a small LED clipped to the front of my shirt, but its NOT on, its only there to shine in somebodys face if they approach. Since its dark, a fellow is hunting by sound alone, so its heads up and on a swivel, if you swing a real wide swath, and rotate your body at the waist, you are getting over 300 degrees of vision..almost 360 if your peripheral is good. I would never hunt from dark til 2am! Thats when theres too many people drunk or up to no good on the beach, but in the dead hours...nobody. Dont keep a light on, you dont need it, and it will only serve to attract attention or disorient you, dont check finds until you are out of there, a very peaceful way to work a beach. I consider the late afternoon until 2am the most dangerous hours to be out hunting anywhere, beaches or parks..

I've seen this a few times also. I did ask the guy right then and there, cuz I was a newbie and wanted tips and tricks. He said for a few reasons: balance, falsing (somehow but I doubt it), but he said mostly for pinpointing and balance. I tried it with my first machine (Ace 250) and it was functional for pinpointing. This guy had years and years on me, so I'm sure it was beneficial to him, and made a difference.
