Looking at getting a NEL coil, have questions

I don't seem to be getting much depth with my at pro with the stock coil. 4 to 5 inches on coins. Garrett is sending me a new coil. I'm also looking at getting a NEL larger coil. Anyone know of the best model to get for the best depth?

First as for you lack of depth: Is the ground balance set properly? Sensitivity too low? Are you in highly mineralized ground area?
Where are you testing the depth: in a planted coin garden, in a field where there might not be coins deeper than 4-5 inches, against another detector? I assume Garret has gone over these points with you. Hope the new coil fixes your depth problem.

Now for the NEL...

I have the BIG NEL on my ATPro right now. It covers a whole lot of ground in very little time, but pinpointing is difficult, especially if your coil is underwater. Under water it has a lot of swing resistance due to its physical size. On the land / dry sand as it is very heavy heavy coil to swing without a shoulder harness - I use the Minelab ProSwing 45. Yes, I will be keeping the BIG COIL it has its use.

Now as for depth...I have not done any side by side testing nor do I worry too much about depth when chest deep in water or looking for a currently lost item. I do worry about reaching too far into the water and filling my 31" gauntlet gloves with water this time of year as the water temps down to about 47 F right now.

Personally I would not use it on the dry sand or in a field unless I was looking for a specific, currently lost item. In a new area, the BIG coil just might be used to "scan" the area for a more defined area to detect.

I also have the ATPro's 4.5 round coil, 5X8 coil, and the standard coil...each has a purpose and an ideal area where it should be used. When it comes to selecting a detector / coil combination, knowledge of the combination, area, environment, and item being looked for will give you the best chance of finding the item.

I tested the stock coil in my front yard. I buried a quarter 8 inches and got nothing, maybe a iron signal here and there as I went over it. I checked prior to placing the new quarter there for iron first. I then moved the quarter to 5 inches and barely got a signal. Had on pro mode, full sensitivity and auto ground balanced. Hoping it's just the coil. I've only been detecting for 6 months now so any advice would help if you have any. How deep have you got silver coins with stock coil and how deep have you found silver with the 5×8 coil? Any tips on settings? Also I hear of guys hearing faint deep signals. I do teem to hear them with headset turned all the way up. Thanks for any advice you can give

First...I will assume you ground balanced by holding the button down while pumping the coil up and down from the ground until you heard no difference in volume, and on the last down to the ground, you stopped and released the button. At this point the reading of ground balance over yard dirt usually is 75-85 range.

Second...which PRO mode are you in, custom, coin or zero?

Third...In the PRO (Proportional Audio) mode the strength of the audio signal is PROprotional to the distance between the coil and the target. So when you swing, your coil should be very close (no more than 1/2 inch) off the ground. For you "test" try STD - ZERO.

In the STD - ZERO mode you should see 00 in the first section of the display and all the segments should be black. The SENSITIVITY should be up as high as you can go without excessive falsing. When you swing over the target the audio intensity will remain the same regardless of the distance you are from the target. Hence STD and not proportional.

I do not measure the depth of my targets. Just like I do not "waste" a lot of time in trying to read the numbers or where the signal came in at on the display. I learn the sounds / tones, how to pinpoint, dig and retrieve a target and move on to the next. As a mater of face only 3 of my 11 detectors have a meter. I do use the Iron Audio on both my ATPro and ATX only as a check after hearing an iffy target.
