Look what was laying on top of the soil!

I was at this new site I've never been too. I was setting up my xterra and I was trying to find a spot to ground balance I looked to my left and saw a circle on the ground. I was like oh there is already a coin that's a good sign. I walked to it and was like no F*cking way. 1892 Indian Head Penny. That's all I found at the site was that coin and a couple odds and ends.

What are some of your best find on top of the soil?

Congrat's on the nice IH, too bad that was all you found there.

I once found a Barber dime on top of the ground in a corn field. I got a good signal, I then kicked the stalks out of the way to dig a hole and their was the dime on top of the ground.

Cool find!

Although my detector picked it up, I found a merc in the grass near a soccer goal. I still can't figure that one out.

My brother found an indian head on a window frame that was laying on the ground next to an abandoned house out he was detecting at. Another strange one.

I found about 4 IH pennies laying on top of the ground in the woods where the dirt is hard near the path. In the same woods where the dirt was soft the pennies sank as usual, but not as deep as in parks, maybe 3-5 inches. From my experience, old coins in woods are quite shallow.

I found a very old Hawking whistle in the woods. When I kicked the leaves out of the way I also kicked the whistle.

Nice! It always amazes me how coins do or don't migrate based on the local conditions.

At one wooded site I hunt a lot, I've found probably close to 100 shotgun shell heads lying on or just under the surface. I figured that they were modern(ish) junk until I looked closer and started dating them. None were newer than the 1930s and the vast majority were 1870s - 1920s. I've pulled quite a number of Indian Head pennies scattered across the same site, and none have ever been more than a couple of inches down, including one dated 1865 from which had to simply brush some dirt away to retreive it. Crazy.

Then there's one area I know should have coins and jewelry, but I don't think I'm getting deep enough. The first six to ten inches are all soft humus and roots, and below that is sand, where the good stuff should be. Too much scraggly brush to break out my big WOT...

Nice find! I found an infantry button right on top of the ground. It was in a field where an old farm house used to be.

when I've seen a coin laying on top of the ground, for some reason, I still sweep my coil over it before I pick it up. HH Randy

Haha I did the same thing! I was like it looks nickle and swung over it and was like penny? Looked down and was like no way!
