LONG tones,,,,,, maybe getting the hang of it and LIKEING IT

Read another thread where a hunter was using the long tones and was very happy with them. I tried it , but not for long cuz I had a hard time PP with it that way, and,,,,, I was just short of patience. Well the last two days I had a better attitude and tried it on long,,,,,, the first coin I hit I thought I actually hit the PP button cuz the tone was SOOOOO LONG. The good target with the long tone REALLY stood out above the short crappy falses. I am able to run at a higher sens cuz the little choppy signals mean nothing,,,,, I just wait untill a long tone comes in and BAM,,,,, good target. THe PP is getting much better and it is worth the hassle to learn the long tones IMHO. Try it in a know taget rich area and tell me what you think,,,,, HH

no one is sharing your joy? sounds good though to me, would not work so well is trash?

that's OK,,,,, not best for all places I'm sure,,,,, will keep trying it out as I go,,,, HH

I've been using long tones for over 3 years. For me, it's the only way I hunt. The only thing I change is from manual 30 to auto in a really trashy area.

Yes in trash area it definately makes the good high tone stand right out amoungst all the other tones. If it wasn't on long you might miss that small high tone peep in all that trash. Marksman7 showed this in his video from down under a while back so I decided to try it out last fall on my last hunts and I got a mercury dime in a trashy spot stood right out.

Yup, add me to the list. I hunt in heavy trash often times and I've been using long tones lately and really liking it.

I tried it after Marksman posted about it and I kinda like it but haven't got to use it enough to really get the hang of it yet. I think it will be a winner though.

I did not care for it at first either,,,, but I admit I did not give it a fair shake. I use the "wiggle" method and REALLY did not like the long tones for that,,,, but after the last two hunts and giving it a bit more time I can see the advantage and learned to be more accurate PPing,,,,,,,,,

Just use it for hunting in really trashy spots. I guess I never had a problem PPing as I use the PP button not the wiggle method as that would drive me batty having such a long sound while doing so.

Thanks for sharing your experience. I have been wondering and thinking about where "long" might fit in. Your reasoning makes perfect sense. I have to give "long" a try on my next hunt, if the ground ever softens up that is. Thank you for your observation, I knew there was a place where long was going to fit, I just haven't experimented with it enough to find that place. Thanks for sharing you observation and I will make sure to thank you after I get the chance to try it. HH -Marc

I might add that the benifit of running long is also tied to being able to run in manual sens at a higher level, where you start to get the chattyness and chirps that drive us all crazy. I'm trying to get more depth and this was a way to deal with the extra noise, again the chirps stay chirps and the good targets get the long tone,,,,,, HH and I hope this helps you find some treasure !!!!

Hi all I have just gone over this thread and well done. If you are having trouble with long I found the best way to master it is on an oval or park where there is minimal trash until you get a feel for it. When you know what the detector is saying to you then tackle the trash.

Just for those to recap on the Videos i did to try and explain it.

I have used long just a little and it was hard to get used to due to the length of the sounds. But with so many good comments I have to give it another try.

I think what you said Marksman7 is good advice. This is going to be an adjustment and working into it is probably the best way.

Curious, those of you who run it, have you tried switching to normal to see how the targets sounded and perhaps if you would have missed them?

I particularly like it when hunting sites with lots of small bits of iron trash and pull tabs. I've made a find in long and then switched to normal and tried both. If I was moving to fast in noisy ground, yeah, I might have passed it. It's great on deep, borderline signals as well.

Long will get better depth than normal even in non trashy areas?

I don't think it's better depth but it get's your attention better at the limits of depth. If you want even deeper, hunt in pin point.
