Lone Star troubleshooting

marzena

New member
Hi everyone
I am new here.
I own a Lone star and suddenly it stopped working, I have no access to any electronics shop so I have to try fixing it myself.
The problem is that when I plug in the coil the unit turns itself off.
I took apart the 5 pin connector and discovered that when I disconnect green or black wire it works or at least the arrows light up on the unit.
How can I fix it? what are the 5 wires leading to?
Thank you for any ideas

Hey marzena. Welcome! I cant help you with your question unfortuneatly. Just be patient here in the forum and Im sure you will get the info you need. Lots of good people here. Good luck and Happy Hunting. Matt

Thank you Matt!!

I just did the test with green wire disconnected; unit is on but the coil is not responsive at all,
Looks like there is a problem with power to the coil.
How to find out if it is the circuit board or connection at the coil?

I'm going out on a limb and guess it's at the bottom of the cable where it enters the coil or just above. Lots of flexing in that area as the coil is swung and maybe the cable is too tight which eventually pulls one or more wires and they short together. It could also be at the other end, a little ways down from the plug where it leads towards the coil, again from flexing or catching on limbs, etc. It sounds like the control head itself is ok.

Do you have another coil or a friend with a BH machine to swap in a different one? Maybe a store that sells them would allow you to try out a 4-inch coil or the 10-inch if they stock them. The BH website www.detecting.com should list dealers near you, but check Scheel's Sports, Cabellas, Walmart, Radio Shack and perhaps other places. Or call BH and get their opinion, they're very helpful.
