Log Book

I just take pictures, date them, water temp, air temp and maybe winds.., I will have a snap shot of the days tide.. And any special notes on the snap shot like ..made it deep with a .34 tide, or hunt shallow, tide was 3.22 above normal. The folder all is in is dated, and the location..sometimes I will have video in the folder of the hunt, or any other moments. Sounds like a lot of work but it takes me about 15 minutes for all.

Someday when I get older and can't hunt I'll be able to relive some of these moments.

Easiest thing to do is get a big aerial photo of the beach. Put and x for gold y for silver where ever you find them (Or #s). On the next page just write a brief description of conditions if anything stands out.

What ever you wish to track. This should give you a good start.

I use a spreadsheet and log in:
date
location
number of rings / chains found by material
time spent detecting
detector and hours used so I can know when to recharge the batteries
miles traveled
Any specific notes I deem necessary

I then have the spreadsheet set up to calculate:
Rings found by month, material, hours per, days per, miles per
Miles traveled
total diamonds found
total ring found
number of returns I make

The spreadsheet also has the date, day number and day left in the year

In separate files I keep the story and pictures of all returns I make
A photo disc of the beaches I have detected with their names and location.
Every beach location I have detected on my GPS - numbering over 600 to date.
I have also put together a DVD with all my metal detecting clubs newsletters (since 1972), photos, news articles etc.

I spent 20 years USN in Submarines Communications. We Logged everything we did. Even made a log entry every hour if we did not do anything. Now I log the minimum. Date, How much or what I found and where I detected. Anything more than that is not my cup of tea. As they say: Different Strokes for Different Folks."
