Location of X-1 probe mount

I did a search looking for discussion on whether to mount the X-1 probe on the top of the shaft above the control box or on the side of the handle. I couldn't find a discussion.

I am sure many would say "it is personal preference" but I wonder if anyone has found the pros and cons of the locations.. and perhaps switched from one to the other. Any help?

I like it on the top. it stays out of the way of swinging and is easily assessable.

I have it mounted on the left side of the shaft close to the switch. It is one motion to grasp the probe and flip the switch. Makes more sense to me than retrieving the probe from the handle and then reaching down to flip the switch.

I'm wondering the exact same thing. It seems like mounting the probe by the armrest will balance the weight better that's why I might move mine from the top of the upper shaft. Ian

I shortend the shaft length to get a much better balance. Mine is on the shaft. I tried the battery area but it was just ackward and i always seemed to be fighting with the two cables. I can now put it down with my right hand grab the probe with my left as i switch it with my right. Personally id rathe have the switch on TOP of the shaft because i find myself wanting to pick up the detector in the middle and my had is always on the switch cable. Im just wondering how much wear that might cause on that connection. I also put one of those plastic cups that you use on a chair leg to cover the tip. They fit tight, dont affect the probe, and saves the tip if you find yourself DIGGING with the probe. As far as the cable hanging down some people put the probe in their pocket as they detect.
