Locating Underground Cable

New member
My son is looking to have a driveway put in from his house to his barn. There is an underground 220v cable running from the house to the barn. He believes that it is buried about 12" down. Will I be able to detect the cable with my X705? If so, will it be easier to detect with the power on or off? Any suggestion on settings?
Thanks in advance,
Bruce

Hi Bruce, I'd say All Metal mode will be your best bet. With power on or power off, you will probably be fine either way. Once you think you have it, in pinpoint mode you should be able to follow the direction of the cable. It may be easier working from where you see the service leaving the house or coming into the barn and working over from there. Most electricians will try to work in a straight line but that's not always possible. Get yourself a handful of golf tees to mark the route as you go.

Good luck!

Hi Mapper65,
Thanks for the info. It makes perfect sense. I'll let you know how it works out. It may be a few weeks as we still have snow on the ground.
Thanks again,
Bruce

Around here code for depth on a buried cable is 18". If you call 811 (free call) you can get a utility cable locator to come out and mark it (in case you can't find it). Here, we have "MISS DIG" that we can call, and they will mark all electrical and phone lines that are buried for free.

Thanks, this might be even better. I will go over and "play" first. If I don't feel confident, I will try the "call before you dig" option.

Call a locator, period. If something else is buried there and you don't know it, you're liable for the costs.
Better safe than sorry.

Our's is called PA One Call. Same deal, you call them and they send someone out to mark all of the utilities.

Sound advice from the above people. As a 30+ year employee of the phone company, I can tell you that it's best to get the professionals to do it. Shifts liability onto them if something gets hit that they failed to mark. It's one thing to hit a phone drop, quite another to hit a gas line or power or water. Be safe and hand dig as much as possible until you can identify exactly where your utilities are.
