Locating an object once you have the hole open.

I have been hunting with my new X-Terra 30 for the past couple of weeks. I have been having some trouble relocating an object down in an open hole using the Pinpoint mode. I either get almost no signal or no signal at all. I have been metal detecting for over 30 years and have not had this problem with other machines. Any ideas?

I've read others post messages about having the same problem.

However I've had the same problem occasionally with my 'Sovereign XS'. It doesn't happen often but it does happen.

Does it happen a lot with your X-Terra or just occasionally?

I appreciate the replies from Barnacle Bill and Macaco. I have problems even if the object is in the plug. I think the Pinpoint mode can detune while the detector is down and you are cutting the plug. So when you go to recheck the detector has a hard time locating the object wherever it is. Does anyone know if the Pinpoint mode does detune?

Hi;
Once in a while I have the same problem. But when that happens, I know that the coin (or whatever) IS in the bottom of the hole. Switch back to "detect" mode and try, if nothing, crank up the sensitivity. That usually works. Problem being, as Bill stated, no ground matrix to carry the signal and the detector is searching the air in the hole. I usually keep digging deeper and checking what I pull out, eventually the item will show up.
Wish they had a Sunray probe for the Xterra. Would help alot.

generally if you set the detector down on it's stand in PP mode it will retune towards the air value(nothing) which means the threshold sound will climb till it's full bore.

Next time it happens(cannot locate target), hold coil waist height and push PP, then go back to detect mode. Lower coil 1 inch high over target free ground and engage PP, swing coil over hole or dirt pile. If no response from hole, target may be vertical and tough to see depending on depth. If no sound over dirt go back to detect mode and swing coil to re-check. Next step is to dig a little more dirt out of hole, or move dirt around in pile.
