It's been awhile since I been to this forum...a couple of years now. This week, I took my LST out of the closet for a trip to Rye Patch, Nevada. I must admit I have used it mostly for coin shooting, so when I got to RP this last Monday, I wasn't prepared for the ground balance issues I was having. With the machine on All Metal, and sensitivity on 10, I was not able to get the threshold to work right. It was either too loud or I was doing something else incorrectly. I had it in the Normal Soil Mode. It picked up signals but they disappeared when the coil went over them on the first pass , but registered on the back stroke. I used the Tesoro manual , but I am doing something wrong. It's me...not the machine. Can someone give me a little help on the proper way to ground balance this unit?

Thanks I appreciate any info. Plan on going back in two weeks.

Humeston, back off on the sensitivity, I never hunted Rye Patch but had some friends who did and the ground is mineralized there. Back off the sensitivity until you can achieve a stable threshold. Also I would operate in the black sand mode at Rye Patch. Also try this:

Retune the Threshold

Hold a quarter still about 2 to 4 inches from the searchcoil, in line with the searchcoil center. Listen to the target response sound for 1 or 2 seconds. Do not move the quarter!

Notice that the target response sound will decrease to the regular level of the threshold sound in just a few seconds. This change in sound is the threshold being automatically retuned. Now, move the quarter from side to side, going past the edge of the searchcoil each time. Notice the regular threshold sound is gone and the target response sound is now a
