Live Hotchkiss Shell

This shell and cap were found in Vicksburg Mississippi. They were about 100 yards apart . We do not know if they was off of the same shell. There have been over a couple hundred shells found in this HUNTABLE area. The explosive part of the shell was about 2 1/2 foot deep. The cap was about 3 foot deep. A Tesoro Tejon with a stock coil found them both. A Bandido II with a 10 1/2 inch eliptical coil would barely get a sounding on it. The Tejon hammered it LOUD and CLEAR
Just though maybe some of the tesoro users might enjoy seeing this

I must say....that looks very impressive.....toss it over here so I can see it better. Nice shell!

Great shell. And may I add, they make for a lovely and impressive doorstop in any decor. Defused, of course, because it's always best to do whatever you can to keep the decor you have.

The nose section looks like it is from a "paper timed fuse" Case Shot shell with brass fuse adapter. The cup appears to be from a Percussion shell (notice no flame grooves on the cup). The correct cup will have flame grooves and line up with the grooves on the nose section. The lead Sabot could also be in the area, as they tended to fly off during flight. Posing a serious concern to the Federal troops in their path. If you can line up with the battery, and search in-between the guns and CS troops, you should be able to find the impact area. These were intended for aerial bursts. Your shell could well have active powder in the lower chamber, so I would have it removed by an expert at disarming CW shells. More than a few have been killed in modern times attempting this without experience. Beauty of a shell gare, thanks for showing. Is it for the 3" gun? Good hunting, David @ Dixie
