listening to the MXT instead of just looking at target I.D.

These are some observations which I have made, and wonder if anyone else has also made these observations, or whether I am wrong. Please feel free to disagree about this.

I find that my MXT in stable max output (+3) with the stock 9.5" coil will find quarters and silver dimes in my old test garden to a depth of 6" with Target Identification and to 7" with high pitch only (Relic mode, dual tone), no target I.D., or with wrong I.D. With the Accelerator 10X14 it goes to 8" with target I.D. and 10" with high pitch only, no targer I.D.
OBSERVATION: although the MXT is a meter machine, it appears that in Relic mode while coin hunting, we can add an inch or two in depth by listening to the pitch (instead of looking at the target I.D.meter), and simultaneously looking at the Depth Meter to see that the target is DEEP (more than 6 inches). Knowing the target is deep alerts me to know why and when the target I.D. is incorrect or blank. Relying on the high pitch will help me find some deep coins and other high value targets.

What say you?

The TID is the first to go on all deep targets on the VLF machines I know of Reggie. It takes a certain level of signal strength to trigger an accurate meter reading, that is why I primarily tone hunt and use the meter only to back up what I thought I might have heard. I dig all deep targets regardless of the TID if it sounds like a non-ferrous target. Some of my best deep finds have been "audio only" targets.

I never use the display screen, I go strictly by the sound, I hardly look at the screen at all. ......By the time I look and determine if I want to dig I can already dig it and know what it is..::thumbup:..... most of my good finds show up as ..:pulltab:...anyway.

I agree with Bob. I only use the TID as a backup to what the sound has already told me. I Use the display mainly to help determine whether I want to dig when I'm hunting in parks, on lawns etc. where keeping any disturbance to the soil at a minimum is important.

Guys, when you are listening to the sounds are you in Relic mode which gives off two different sounds, or are you in coin and jewelry mode where there is only one sound? If only one sound, how do you distinguish between the keepers and the losers? Thanks!

Some of my best finds with my m6 have been really quiet signals that have not registered at all on the screen.I've also had signals that jump around on the screen a lot and have a bias towards showing iron.....when dug some of these signals have turned out to be corroded buttons.Visual displays are not really that accurate and should not be trusted if u are unsure about a signal.

I usually hunt in the prospecting or relic mode, but even in C/J mode the sound can be different, it can be low, high, crisp,or dull listen to the sound you can tell the different.

I use tone for coins, waiting for solid repeaters or good iffys, . but still cant help looking at the screen. But for gold nuggets in iron infested areas hunt without the grunt, in bad ironstone country it can give false half hearted whimper grunts from a mix of a good target and bad ground that can bug you at times, and rely pretty heavily on the iron probability meter. Only when the junk is thick though and the targets are "stand outers". Otherwise I dig most everything.
