0500 came early in the mountains of Idaho for our intrepid travelers. Betty had set Elsons alarm (By accident she claimed) for 0045 so it was the second time he had gotten up and had his coffee. I arrived at the motel at 0535 and found them standing in the darkness with detectors in hand. We loaded up all their gear and the adventure, and my truck started. This time anyway.
After an hour and a half of freeway driving we were ready to leave civilization and head to the ghost town. Before we left the last town Elson and Falk wanted to stop and buy some bread and peanut butter. Elson also got a hot deal on breakfast "sammiches" Two for three dollars! With high hopes we jumped into the truck and hit the starter. Click,,,,,click... "That thing that hold back water!!!!" My battery (Which was almost new!) chose that moment to die. I found out how much love Elson had for Fords. "That stands for Found on the road disabled" Was one of the many remarks I had the pleasure of enduring at the hands of the eager hunters as I walked around the truck stop to find someone who would jump start us. Oh well, it has to be easy to find a new battery at 0700 right?
I was hoping for a miracle and we found it, a Walmart just a half a mile away!! We pulled in and shut it off, click,,,,, click, yep still dead. I dashed into the 24 hour open oasis and procured a new battery from a man with a heavy Cajun accent. He was from New Orleans! Man dem Cajuns is everywhere. By the time I sprinted out with the battery, the dynamic duo had the other one out and ready for a transplant.

If you know these guys at all, just imagine what kind of ribbing I had to put up with, all day long, about this. Elson is going to post some terrible lies about this, so be warned! He said the incident had made his trip, and we could just go home with his little treasure to harass me about for ever.
Well after 20 minutes we were on the road again. We drove through some fantastic mountains as the sun was coming up. Elson even got to see some jack rabbits in the road and he spotted some "Cantelopes" grazing in the scrub.
The boys were chompin' at the bit when I left the dirt road and drove out in the dry lake. Detectors appeared and the swinging began, big time. It looked like Elson was choppin' weeds for a while there. We started out with good finds right away, but I will post more on that later. In less than and hour of hunting, Elson let out a whoop that may still be echoing down the lake. He rushed over and held up......

Can you tell what it is? Just look at his face, that is one happy Cajun!

Elson had his spur!! He said that he had been looking for a spur ever since he started detecting! " I can hang up the detector and retire now" he said. I thought he might be serious. This was the one thing he wanted more than anything else, to find. He even started to forget about the battery affair, a little.
The rest of the hunt, Falk and I would look around to see where Elson had gone. About every 20 minutes he would go over to the truck and take the spur off the dash and, well, fondle it. Falk walked over to see what was up once. He said Elson was listening to some Barry White music on my radio and was caressing his new love. I told Falk we better just leave those two alone. Three is company and four is a crowd when it comes to Elson and a spur it would seem.

We took a break as the day got hotter and Elson was explaining his custom head phones to me. I had asked him why he had carpet pad on them. What do you think?

Falk even did his desert shiek impression to keep off the sun.

The two of them decided at about 1400 that it was too hot and wanted to go water hunting somewhere. We loaded up and headed to the wet.
Stay tuned for chapter 2. Two if by sea. And the sea was angry that day my friends!
