Liquidating Finds

OK. I know this is a touchy subject for some but I need some input. If you do not want to post it, please send in a private message.

I am starting to get a small collection or rings. Nothing mind blowing yet but so have some gold and silver.

First, where do you get your stuff appraised? I know you can do it at a jeweler but they can cost an arm and a leg to get it done.

Second, where do you sell your unwanted jewelry? I know many will not sell anything they find but I am looking at getting a second machine and would love to be able to afford the one I want, which means some of my finds must go.

I do not have anything at this time that gives clues to how to find the owner and nothing has turned up in the Lost and Found areas.

You maybe able to put up some finds for credit towards the new detector.I know there's a few stores like that here in the N.East.other wise find a shop that buys gold/silver see what you can get.I would try to sell any nice rings privately, diamonds ect. you'll get more.I built a good relationship with a coin/jewlery guy he helps me with testing and gives me very fair prices.I also trade junk silver/gold to have nicer pieces repaired.I also don't have lots of free cash to waste with kids to feed ect.I sell items to pay for gas ect. so I can hunt more!I also find many items for people who have lost them..and have spent many hours looking for items for people.I have no guilt selling finds and don't see why some would look down on you for doing so!!So do what you gotta do.what detector do you want? HH

Beach Hunter,

Thanks for the ideas. There are very, very few detector stories in my area. You would think San Diego would be crawling with them. I will check out some of the local jewelers and see what I can work up.

Not sure on the detector. I am looking at the new Minelab GT. It is not waterproof but would do find for dry/wet sand. It will be mainly a backup for my Excalibur.

Scoutingbear: I have no personal experience doing so, but I do know of people that have sold to KITCO in the past. Not sure what their current policy is now re: jewelry gold but I would jump on their web site as a starter. I did a quick check and you can hit Precious Metal Store tab on their home page then hit the "selling to KITCO button for the latest prices ie: 14K 1-15oz for $7.49/gram.It appears they have an email link for Q&A's. I would start there and maybe they can steer you. They're big and have a rep to maintain so I think they will be honest.
Be carefull about ads in paper etc stating they're gold buyers, lots of unscroupulous buyers around! Good luck!

Scoutingbear: Just checked out another site that was recommended sometime earlier in one of the forums. Looks like they can give you more data. Money for Gold.com (Div of James Diamonds Natl Jewelry Mfg Co. ocated in Penn.)

Not sure if I'd auction off a diamond ring (or any precious stone) on ebay but a simple gold or silver ring might sell fine. Ads are cheap. Just make sure to set a reserve so you don't give it away. I sold some coins I found on ebay and was pleasantly surprised.

I`ve been to kitco in person with a friend selling off his SCRAP gold. They are very fair and honest.I would say they pay better then any other source I know about.Just be careful and remove any stones you want to keep before going there. They process so quick and any stones get pulled out and thrown in the trash bin before weighing.Knowing the size of the kitco operation I very much doubt they go routing through to find them once your out the door.I heard they won`t normally do walk in business with the public and it`s suposed to be mailed in for what ever reason.

Hope this helps...Tom.

Hey Scoutingbear, I remember alot of posts last year or before, in reference to a company in Michigan, that supposedly, alot of the jewelers deal with in melting down their scrap gold.
There were several posters on the treasure forums, that have used this company, and stated that they were EXTREMELY REPUTABLE!! The price they quote you at that the time, is the price you get, NO HIDDEN FEES OR CHARGES. They have a fast turnaround time too!! Best of luck, hh,
