New member
*** Am going for my scuba certification and will be going under for the gold! Have a DFX now but need the best underwater detector I can find as I 'll be heading to water all over the world (hobby) Can someone with great knowledge of underwtaer machines help me out a bit? Thanks You guys continue to be a GREAT group of people with hardly any negative messages............. : )

If you have money to Burn, then it's a coin flip on a Fisher CZ-21 or a minelabs Excalibur II

I agree with BH - if you're diving in places where expect little trash, a PI (pulse induction) unit is the best you can do - it'll go very deep and sound off on smaller items - not sure which PI units are the best out there.

I would say if you're diving, you want to make sure to go with a VERY reputable mfg. with a good warranty and repair record and also make sure you get one that is rated to go as deep as you're planning to go with it.

Good luck - look forward to your finds!

Anyone know what improvements were made from Whites Surfmaster PI to the Surfmaster PI Pro?

If you're around wrecks with lots of iron it may be worthwhile to have a VLF like the Excal but for depth it is hard to beat a PI machine. A couple of new, super deep hunting units are in the works so wait until you get your open water before putting your money down on a PI. You don't want to wind up with last years technology if you can have this years for about the same price. A used Excal 1 might be a good deal if you can get one from somebody trading up to the Excal 2 for the pretty colours.

The Infinium will out do any of those machines mentioned because it is designed for Gold, and Prospecting. Most water PI's are preset groud balance. Infinium is auto track. Chech it out. It IS EL DEEPO. For real.
Also they have just improved the coils for it and it is now much quieter around electrical fields. Good luck with which ever you get. I would do both PI and water VLF If the funds allowed.

IF YOU DON'T WANT TO SPEND A LOT OF TIME DIGGING SMALL PIECES OF IRON STAY AWAY FROM THE PULSE INDUCTION UNITS.
THESE UNITS ARE THE BEST FOR DEPTH , BUT YOU SPEND MOST OF YOUR TIME DIGGING SMALL PIECES OF IRON .
OF ALL THE UNDERWATER UNITS I HAVE TRIED (MANY), OVER MY 20+ YEARS OF UNDERWATER DETECTING, THE EXCALIBUR IS BY FAR THE BEST.
THE EXCALIBUR WITH THE DISCRIMINATION LEVEL SET ON -0- ELIMINATES SMALL PIECES OF IRON THAT CAN WASTE HOURS OF YOUR TIME DIGGING. I NEVER RUN MY DISCRIMINATION LEVEL ANY HIGHER BECAUSE ANY HIGHER AND YOU CA START LOSING SENSITIVTY TO PLATINUM
WHICH IS THE 1ST PRECIOUS METAL YOU LOSE AS DISCRIMINATION INCREASES.
THE EXCALIBUR ALSO GIVES YOU THE STABILITY YOU NEED TO HEAR WEAK SIGNALS.

THE PI UNTS HAVE THEIR PLACE, BUT THEY ARE SUPER SENSITIVE TO IRON.

thanks Dave. I appreciate it very much After reading alot here I bought a DFX 2 years ago and love it for on ground... kinda tough with so many gizmos and settings etc but..... I hope the underwater machine is a lot easier and less to set up like the DFX. I get so many opinions and wonder why when someone reccs. , say the Excal. they don't say how it's super sensitive as you did < ithink... to say iron. I hope I get the right underwater machine. Does anyone know when these "NEW BETTER" ones are coming out for underwater and what brand and model will it be and cost? Thanks again.
