Gettin' back "On The Roag Again" .... Restoring my BH Red Baron #5 (late '70's) unit! Has VLF & Total Disc. toggle switches. Still works great. Ground balance & tone knobs still there, too. Has solid coil. Has wiring problem, I think. Batteries won't register. Maybe need new battery carrige. Couple of springs in the old one have corrosion. Anyway... a unique find w/ this unit is a Registered Chauffers hat pin, (or pocket pin). In the shape of the state of Missouri.... 'bout size of a silver dollar. Serial # steel stamped into it. Dated 1932.... raised numbers. Clasp pin on the back still there & still works! Found in front yard where Harry Trumans mother used to live in Grandview, Mo. It's a nice piece.Gonna check the archives & see if I can get it ID'd. More later on this...... BigSquid55

Not yet. gonna do that this weekend. Got a new batt. cage for it. (5/8/10). p.s. 1944 must have been a good year for wheaties! I find several w/ this date! Will get back to ya!

found same type pin here in vt. 1934 from georgia

when you get the lid off can you please help me with a general battery connection question?
I know you will say yes, you sound like that sort of guy
I'm following the thread

Hey, Alimo88, Got the lid off this a.m.! Just take the side screws out! Don't take the box off of the handle. Don't need to!The circut board is held on by the tuning & adjustment knobs, I think. The knobs are held on by little screws in the side of 'em. They don't just pull off. Then there's a nut to take off, just under the knob. It's a real Yogi, but, they don't make 'em like they used to! My unit takes 8 AA batteries. How 'bout yours?

Damn I have a red baron RB5
it take two banks of batteries, both use 8 AA's for a total of 16 batteries
I think it's a plus and minus 12 volt system

Hey, Alimo88......... How 'bout your search coil? Is it solid? Mine is... w/ 2 arrows on it pointing to the center.... built-in pinpointer, I guess. Works like one. My RB5 unit is red w/ a white coil. The whole control box is appx. 6 x 8 x 10 in. Yours? :usaflag:

Gonna go out "tecting" my front yard again. Found 2 old boyscout neckerchief clasps the other day.... 'bout 4" down. Both showed up on my readout as penny or dine???? Still gettin'used 2 my new SharpShooter II Ultra Mag! Still don't know if I like the coil or not. We'll see. :detecting:

To you folks I've been a talkin' to: Retired my RB5 today! It just wouldn't take anymore! Did brain surgery on it....... Didn't work! Guess I'll just have to get used to this SS II Ultramag. It is working, but, I'm havin'a hard time peelin' away from the old school!! Times have changed... Guess I need to! When I have a good find.... I'll be back! Willie has left the building! But, I'm still here! BigSquid

@trkdrvr36 Is this the same as your machine (see photo) see I have two battery holders. Both with 8 AA's

Almost.... same logo, but, 1 batt. pack.... & the circut board is twice as long. Half as many wiring pigtails. Assembly appears 2 B the same..... same coil. :rage: tried 2 put my RB5 coil on my SS II UM unit, but, the plug is just a tad too big for the recepticle. Same configuration, though.
