Lightweight Metal Detector

New member
Been detecting farm fields, old house sites for coins over 30yrs. been using my White's Xlt but at 68 it's just too heavy. looking for something with a display, good depth, not too much of a learning curve @$400 or so that weighs less that 3lbs. been looking at teknetics gamma and delta as well as the white's treasurepro. any help would be appreciated. thanks!

have you tried a harness? The right one will distribute the weight over your entire upper body. Might still be able to swing that sucker around for a few more

The Delta is pretty slow at recovery compared to most of the rest of the Teknetics lines or their Fisher cousins.
The newer generation Bounty Hunter models are another cousin and many mention the newer Land Ranger Pro is light, feature rich, fast and deep for the money...a good value.

I have no idea how the Whites unit does regarding this stuff but it doesn't seem to be mentioned on the forums as much as other models.

In your list if you can get a Gamma for that price I would go for that.
A good used F70, (my loyal hunting partner), can sometimes be found for about $400 and is amazing once learned.
An anniversary edition F75 can still be bought for $500 from most dealer's if you call them, the green T2 Classified is listed everywhere for $499 but there might be discounts on that too but don't quote me.
The T2 Classic and 85th anniversary F75 are flagship models with most newer programs and features but missing just a few vs. the fully loaded full featured flagship versions at twice the price.
You get a full warranty and tons of amazing features on both including the noise dampening DST shielding.
Kind of a flagship lite....and all these models I mentioned are extremely capable and light as a feather.

I see your price range and I cant comment on detectors in that range but heres some food for thought. A deus it weighs 2.5 pounds does have a learning curve BUT its the best in the business for what your talking about imo cost 3 x as much as you want to spend but I thought I would put it out there anyway.

Many of us in the UK use a Deus these days. Jerry.

Jerry,in the opening post he mentions he has a budget of $400 even a Deus lite does not come close too that budget

The garrett at pro weighs 3.03 lbs and is a great machine.Just go down the used route. Also, even better,a makro racer weighs a few ounces less i believe and these machines are brilliant performance wise.Again, you would have to go down the used route if you want to spend around the 400 mark and even used you may need to spend a little more.

In the new market like me your more limited by cost, but in the used market you may be able to do better, about everybody on this forum that's been here for a while is REALLY GOOD TO DEAL WITH (meaning if its not right they'll work to make it right) so in the used market things turn in your favor a lot.
$400.00 can get you,
An F70,
Maybe an Omega 8500
An AT Pro,

and many others.

Now I know that you stated a detector with a meter, but if your searching for mainly for higher conductive range coins then here is an ULTRA LIGHT gem that's deep! its got dual discrimination controls that if set right will let you work around iron better than MOST all other detectors and get those coins and that is a Tesoro Tejon! its so light weight its unbelievable!! pinpointing is just crazy weird! BUT IT DOES NOT HAVE A METER! but the audio discrimination is GREAT once your ears get train to it.

thanks so much for all the replies!!! i've tried the harness detecting thing or something but my shoulders wouldn't have it. sorry for the tight budget or i would get a XPD. i will check out the Tesoro Tejon because i started detecting with a Fisher 1266X but the XLT spoiled me i guess. the used market will probably be my best bet to get the most bang for the buck and so much research to do. once again thanks!

I've seen used Deus in the classifieds for $8 or 9 hundred.

Well, if he had a budget even CLOSE to that there would be LOTS of new detector options. So,if were going to give him some suggestions we would do good I think to keep his budget in mind! My budget for detectors in the past has been closer to the $350.00 range, and I've done pretty good in the used market with the $350.00 (or under in the past) I've gotten,
An Omega 8000,
A CZ-7A Pro
A Whites XLT,
Two Tejon's
A Coin$trike,
A Vaquero,
An ID-Edge,
A 1270
A Another (left Over) NEW Coin$trike,
A Whites 5900 Pro sl,
My F70 (came in very close to the $350.00 range) (pictured below)
And I got a pretty nice 1266 for free (my neighbor just walked over one day and ask if I had any use for it and handed it to me)
and none of them are ones that I could have bought NEW!
My F70 was a deal were before I got it it was shipped to Fisher Labs to get a new screen cover installed and NEW foam pads for the cuffs, then Fisher forwarded it on to me, they also fully tested and corrected any other issue that may have impaired performance.

They're LOTS of good deals on used detectors for us poorer folks to get upgrades. My used price range most times gets me into the the upper middle class of detectors, but NEW I'm left with mostly entry range, or maybe one step up, but you do get a warranty.

Wow! this is great! i have found a teknetics gamma 6000 and also a delta 4000 that "i dig history" on this forum endorses. still a lot to compare. thanks!

The Tejon is a little like the 1266, but the Tejon doesn't have all the noise! and I believe the Tejon has a better audio discrimination vs the 1266! I've had two Tejon's and I still have a 1266 and the reason I sold the Tejons was to recover some money, I had gathered several detectors and then lost my job so I moved out all my extra detectors and turned them into cash (I did kept the 1266 because my neighbor gave it to me for free and I just didn't feel right about selling it)
The Tejon is a powder puff of a detector in that its like swinging nothing, its VERY small you can swing it very VERY SLOW! The Tesoro's like the Tejon has a pinpoint mode but ITS RARELY EVER NEEDED! you can pinpoint in disc mode so easy its amazing!. I started out in detecting with a Teknetics 9000/B and that was a wonder at the time for metered (VID) detectors, so it was (is) hard for me to break away from the meter. For a beep and dig detector I would give the Tejon a pretty high rating. I had a Vaquero and it was pretty good, but to get the depth out of I had to super tune it, then what happens to it is stuff beyond the 5" to 6" deep range its more all metal and loses much of its discrimination ability, the Tejon's are not like that!
