I just wish Minelab would put all these great hints I've read online in their book or on their website! It would be great to know exactly where on the screen a certain coin is likely to come up (the crosshair, I mean) Or maybe what sensitivity numbers usually correspond with what, or what the best settings to run in are....
Minelab doesnt even provide a video! I paid 500 bucks for a used garrett 3 years ago and I got a video! I paid 800 bucks for this minelab and MINELAB DOESNT EVEN MAKE A VIDEO! Whats up with that?!?!

Jeremy,
If you have some spare silver/copper,nickel coins around the house take them out back and plant them at varrying depths at least at 18 inches apart and mark the gound where they are. Write on a piece of paper where each coin is too.
Then take your detector and go over each one noting where each coin appears on your detector and how each coin sounds.
You might put some extra ones on their sides in the holes as well.
Plant some trash too.
You will then know exactly where a coin will appear on the screen.
For me silver it extreme upper right hand corner
penny to the left of where silver comes
nickel for me hits about 1/8 inch off bottom and about an inch from the right side of screen.
Sounds are important too!
If you don't want to do a coin garden then just air test each respective coin.

They aint going to do that for fear of frightening people off.
People may be telling you "you will get cross hairs here for this coin " and "cross hairs here for that coin " It just don't work like that, depending on your settings, discrimination and ground conditions you can get the crosshairs to be virtualy anywhere on the screen, there are just too many variables.

Francis,
There's another user who claims that he put a piece of laminate on the screen and marked exactly where each type of coin would come up and it works perfectly for him. Other users on other sites report that nickels come up 1/8 of an inch to the bottom and 1 inch from the right; and so on.
I did some of my own tests earlier and found that for the most part, nickels come up in the same place almost all the time, quarters, and other coins the same place as well.
Minelab COULD make this detector easier to use by adding more information to the book.
I dont think that the "scare" factor is an issue. If someone pays the 1000 bucks or whatever to get this detector, then they probably already have experience with metal detectors or they have the time to learn the detector. Besides, most people think I'm crazy when I tell them that I even OWN a metal detector. Anyone who will pay as much as we all did for the explorer WONT be scared off by it. Frustrated, maybe; but not scared.

Jeremy,
Here's a good home page of Jim Vokes. There's alot of info here. And if you ever have a question just ask it here. Sooner or later you'll get an answer.
