I do this Lorraine for the safety of the pups while thier sibs are bein born.
Mom can, and will ignore prior born while in labor and can lay on allready born and suffocate them.
I will allow her to care for only the first one. Remove the sac and clean and such.
But then as soon as labor starts again, i ill take away the first and brood it until the next one whelps.
As soon as subsequent ones drop, i'll take them away and replace them with the first one while i clean. cut the chord etc, with the following ones.
Once delivery is complete, i'll clan the whelping box, convert it to a 'home' for all i'll give them all back to her.
All this insures a good safe start for all the wee ones. :D

Careful with that heat lamp, it may be to hot for the puppies. I always used a heating pad under the towels. Since this is her first time, she may get real confused as to what to do, put each new one under her nose for her to lick before you put them in the cardboard box. You will be awake all night!
