I asked earlier about how to get permission to hunt new sites and you guys(and gals) came up with some good ideas. One that I really liked was the idea of a business card.

Here's where I need help, I am not the most creative guy, but maybe if we work together we can get a couple of ideas together and maybe even come up with a generic card that we all could use, and just change the personal information.

I hope this is not the wrong forum. Maybe I should post it in one or two others.

Thanks in advance

Pulltab, I am not so sure that is a good method of "warming over" private property or even business or municipal property owners or caretakers. I believe the best method is the time tested and true "introduce yourself, sit-down-on-the-porch-and-chat-for-a-minute" approach.......a business card is just that.........a business approach! Most people here where I live in rural PA are not too warm to a door-to-door salesman, and if you walk up on the porch and hand them a business card they will see you as just that. Think about it, looking out your front window and seeing a guy come up on the porch, "honey, there is one of those damn metal detector guys again! Everybody QUIET!!! Let's just pretend we are not home!"

Just my opinion on the matter, I mean you no disrespect but I do believe, even if it takes several visits and hour long chats with the property owners (and a share of your spoils after the hunt), that getting to know the property owners and earning their trust is the best way to go about it.

I use a business card for gaining permission to someone's property IF approached while out MD'ing. Some one stops and ask or wants to know what I am doing, ends up with a chat and me giving him/her my card and 8 out of 10 times when they see I am whom I say I am and the can contact me its a big come on over.

I do carry in my truck two styles of business cards, one with just my name and cell number on it, and one with my name & home number on it. I use the first one Name and cell number to folks I meet while detecting, I use the 2nd one when getting permission to hunt a state park, or other area that they need to know you are a responsible detector user. By having a card showing your Home Number and full name with address, they might check it out first then seeing it's ok then give you permission to hunt.

Don't just give any-one a card with all your home information on it as you just might get ripped off!!

HUmmmmm.
My approach is a bit different.
I let people know I am interested in the history of
the area and gathering info about the land and buildings. I usually have some
material on the area at hand that I can show them. I indicate that
I am putting together some info for the files at the local public
library. I ask if it would be ok If I could run my detector over
the area and probe for any old bottles with a metal ground probe.
If you use tis approach be sure you actually follow up and write
up your finding and present it to your local library. They always
appreciate new materials.
