Is it worth amplifying weaker signals at the expense of less separation in the targets? Reid

Hi Reid,
Now, would that be the same as asking how long a piece of string is?
I always pump up the GAIN in the right area and of course that would be purely up to ones own descretion and need.
I have not actually found it to be a problem in target seperation. Just that it seems to amplify or maybe cause more false signals, but it seems to enhance the signals that are comming from a ggod target. This would need you to sweep a suspect signal at different angles and even then you may only get a response form one approach. I think that this would still indicate a good target and you should dig it. The AUDIO RESPONSE in AUDIO menu can also play it's part. Try the 4 different sets NORMAL 1,2 or 3 with a lowered SENSITIVITY in SEMI AUTO say 16, in trashier areas. IRON MASK set at say 10 to 15 works well, but again it is really dependent on ground conditions and immediate enviorons in any given situation. Maybe drop your THRESHOLD down to 6 although its seems that some believ there is a reduction in depth. Hard to say at times as it does not seem to be that much of a problem with my searches.I think I have covered it. Hope this helps

Reid, if you want to hear the really deep signals pretty strong, then up the gain. I prefer to use a more moderate setting on the gain as I like to hear the deep hits more softly that way I know it is a deep hit and not a 3 0r 4 inch target.
It is a matter of personal preference tho. Some like all the hits to be loud. Gain set at say 8 or 9 will make a hit sound about the same as a shallow target. At a lower gain setting like 5 or 6 the deep hits will not be as loud as a surface hit.
Target seperation is not a factor in conjunction with the gain. Deep setting is the least seperation of targets Fast is the greatest seperation of targets. Fast/Deep is good for faster recovery and good Depth. Hope this helps a little.

I run mine at 5, I like the deep ones kinda soft sounding. I can pick em out even in the trash.
Hey congrats on your new Explorer getting there..and you finds last weekend!!
Keep at it..you r doing gr8

I think that BiLL said it, but I just want to clarify this... Gain only effects your audio response and doesn't do anything in terms of depth or target seperation. Gain takes a weak sound and makes it louder - that's all.
Cranking your gain up to 7 has the effect of making deep targets sound like they are shallow. Lowering your gain to 3 or 4 will provide you with a lot more audio information about the depth/size of the target. Some people prefer audio feedback as they like to dig only the deeper, older targets, while others don't want to miss anything and use the depth reading on the display to determine depth prior to digging.
You can also use gain to help you in noisy places. Say your are near a highway - jacking up the gain will help you hear everything. If you are in a woods, you might want to go with a lower setting so you can skip over shotgun shells while concentrating on older, weaker targets.
Finally, if you determine that you like the lower gain settings, I would urge you to find some headphones that are good at blocking out environmental noise while providing solid audio response.

Thanks, I think I got it now, hehe. I just got a pair of Grey Ghost Nugget Buster NDT's, they should arrive tomorrow. Thanks again for the help, Reid(KS)
