Lets share some tips, How do you clean buttons?

Relic Bob has some pretty good videos on Utube concerning a method using ammonia to clean buttons. I tried this method and it worked pretty well. Depending on the condition of the button, just be careful not to leave it in the ammonia bath to long. Check out his videos and see what you think. One of my nicest Eagle I buttons really looked nice with this method. The gold gilt on the button really popped.

I use his method also. It works great. I've heard of naval jelly. Never used it though. I dry brush most if the buttons I find. Most of them are falling apart.

After cleaning them with ammonia and then rinsing them thoroughly, I let them dry and then put a light coat of petroleum jelly on them and this seemed to work well for me.

Jeff, if you watched the videos, just be sure to monitor the buttons in the ammonia bath, and be careful not to leave them in too long. I was sorta paranoid that I'd ruin them, but if your careful, they'll come out fine. I know you know this already, but if a buttons condition has deteriorated a great deal, I pretty much just give them a light brush. Let us know how they turn out. Best of luck to you.

I think I have a post on this forum about cleaning some buttons. My buddy showed me Bob's method & I was amazed what it did. I mean I had a eagle artillery button that was totally green with just a little gold showing. It turned out beautiful. I dont know what it would do yo a common eagle button. It might turn it red. Anyway good luck.

Here's a couple I did using relic Bob's method. What it did to the artillery button is amazing.

I've used aluminum jelly on buttons that showed a little gold with good success.
