when I am out where there are groups, they leave me alone, probably because they think someone doing this is weird anyway... especially if I have my long handle shovel with me

Hunting with a buddy helps also.....in any case know your surroundings
and keep alert...Remember lots of the critters out there have two legs...Luckily both times I have been harms way was on a saltwater beach and had a long shovel and I let them know I would use same and they went on their way...

Agree on the weird part! I don't think people realize we are doing this for a hobby exercise and to enjoy the outdoors. But after reading this story which drew tons of responses, I thought it should be known. I notice parks, beaches, anywhere that is free also draws the real weirdos!
