Lesson learned

Got out for a while and found a trashy area and tried the Explorer with the X 8 on it, run the sensitivity at 32 semmi auto and it ran smooth, threw a quarter on the ground and it wouldnt get it if the coil was higher than 2 inches, so I tried it in manual sensitivity and it was very unstable so I lowered the sensitivity to 22 and it was better and now the depth was a good 5 inches over the same quarter. Lesson one learn to stay with manual sensntivity in trashy areas.
Next I had a guy with a Sovereign ask me to check and see if I got a signal over one of his target with my Explorer. I couldnt get a signal and he said the Sovereign showed a good coin deep, so I had my wife with her IDX Pro try it and she too got a good signal, so I tried everything from Manual sensitivity to iron mask at a -16 and no luck, so I told him to dig it as I wanted to see what the Explorer was missing. It was a 1959 penny at 6 inches and all I could do was shake my head and said I cant explain this as the Explorer should have gotten it.
Went back to detecting and it just didnt sound right and I though great now I have to send it in to be repaired only to discover that the X1 probe was on the whole time and no wonder it couldnt get the penny. Lesson 2 i learned is to turn off the probe when done using it. Got to make sure I learn #2 real well as it dont look good that the Explorer gets beat by a Whites, but that is operator error.

That standing liberty I got Saturday was every bit of 10" deep and Auto 32 picked it up loud and clear. Maybe in the air Auto is lowering it too much. Of course all bets are off when you are talking about the 8" coil. It probably is not a good idea to use Auto with a small coil. You are running your gain at least 7 with the 8" aren't you?
What ever works for you. I know what does for me.

First time out with the X-1 probe on my Sovereign I walked around for about 4 or 5 minutes before I realized my probe was on. I still do it every now and then.

I remember pinpointing, digging the target then starting detecting again when I first got my machine. About 10 metres further on I thought gee these targets are all sounding the same now, dumb arse left the thing in pinpoint mode!!!! I still do that occassionally, but I notice sooner now
hey don't laugh!! I bet I'm not alone doing that either!!!

Ric,
I have the gain at 10 as i need all the volume I can get on a target. The area was where a sidewalk was and taken out, so I thought I would try it out and at 32 semi auto is was very smooth sounding so I put a quarter down to see how it would sound and is when I notice only about 2 inches of depth. Tried manual, but it was too erradic so I dropped it down and it was better and seen where I could get around 5 inches now. I switched back to semi auto with the lower sensitivity and it was better, seems with that high of sensitivity (32) it must of over drive the curcuits in semi auto and lose depth. Try it sometimes in a trashier area and see what you think.
