The absolute safest place is private property with express permission from the owner. Schools, playgrounds, and public parks (city & county) are generally safe for coin/ring hunting unless posted otherwise. State parks vary widely so ask first. Public beaches are almost always OK for coin/jewelry hunting. Don't even think of taking your detector near National Parks or designated historic sites. Violate that rule and you will go to jail. Relic hunting is getting increasingly risky to pursue, so make sure you have ironclad permission before you do it. Wherever you hunt, dig carefully, leave the ground as good as you found it and, if challenged by someone, apologize for not knowing you were doing something wrong, and leave immediately. HB
