I normally stick to discreet areas out of the public eye,but decided to prospect on a local dam on a very popular and easily accessible 'beach' which is crowded in the summer months, and detected by all and sundry in the winter, evidence of recent digging was obvious (and we wonder why detecting gets banned) Anyway I put the Deus on Basic 1 and tried the beach area, absolutely no near surface finds, but a few very small and very deep objects,so the locals weren't very thorough or their machines didn't have the capacity to detect the deeper things. As the water level goes down every winter I decided to seek out little coves and also do the waterline, especially rocky areas (you get snagged up,you lose your end tackle)
Anyway the coves for the shyer people resulted in one gold ring,a nice silver bracelet,an extremely old very fine silver ring,a Double Tournois circa 15/1700 century (completely blank, but I find enough to easily identify it,the end of the bracelet is touching it,second photo) and some modernish coins. The waterline gave fishing weights and some spinners,so,overall not a bad few hours wandering about!! :detecting:

Looks similar to the stuff I found at a local lake earlier this year. I had tried the swimming area but it had been detected really hard, so I moved off to the side of it and started hitting alot of targets. Ended up with 2 gold rings, junk ring, turquoise earring, lbs. of fish weights and coins.
I also came across evidence of recent digging in the swimming area. Holes everywhere and no apparent attempt to fill them in. Some of the open holes still had the pull tabs laying in the bottom.

Exactly. "And you wonder why detecting gets banned"

Great hunt brother !!!

I have been doing some shallow water hunting this Fall and winter, and noticed lots of pretty deep holes in the shallow water that are dug and yet there is trash still either in them or very close by, as well as good targets too! At first glance it appeared to me that they were made by another detectorist who did not know what they were doing, but then I noticed all those holes were made by the migrating geese, ducks, swans as they were guzzling around in the mud looking for something to eat!...these holes were not up on the dry sand, but in the water from 3' deep to the shore...so if your lake gets some duck traffic, it could be from them...

On the beach which I crossed and crisscrossed there were holes everywhere, definately made with a spade/shovel and with the sand in a heap on one side, most with a piece of foil in the bottom of the hole, definately someone metal detecting, there are some extremely stupid people about!!!
It takes a few seconds to backfill with sand,I have permission on most of my neighbours fields and I'm sometimes digging holes 25cms/10" deep I defy anybody to trace my movements and where I've dug,a little respect and common sense goes a long way.
