Left work early aND caught the 4pm Low Tide at Horseshoe Bay:thumbup:

I decide that it was time to drop the workaholic mode and get out for a little surf time. I got to Horseshoe Bay just after the 4pm low tide and changed up at the locker rooms so conveniently provide by the Bermuda Government.
The first thing I see as I entered the beach was a bunch of 20 somethings playing beach soccer (it's actually called football here). One of the kids says "What are you after?". I said "Gold, always Gold but Diamonds are Good Too".
As I entered the surf I knew it was going to be a rough ride as the waves were breaking right in the mine and they were 3 to 4 feet (the marine forecast said 1 to 2 feet but go figure). Anyway, I had a hunger for Gold to fill and I wasn't going to be denied so into the washing machine I went. Jeepers it was rough! The first target was a pull tab but the second was a junk earing, third was a silver bracelet and the fourth was a 10k white gold ring with a heart shaped aquamarine stone and chip diamonds, OH YES!!
After an hour of pounding I had enough and headed over to a sheltered area which produced some pull tabs and a quarter in another half hour of hunting so I bailed to the car and a hot shower.
I was hoping for more but quite content with gold with ice even if it is only 10k.

Nice ring. I like it.The seashore looks similar to ours here in Barbados.
Question for yah. How do you manage to scoop in the right spot , when the waves are knocking you around??
I am thinking of snorkeling with my Whites Surfpro. Any suggestions on what type of scoop or other digging device to use...the long handled scoop will be useless...I guess......unless I modify it into a shovel config.
Any suggestions will be welcome. Here's a shot of 1 of my beaches on the south coast.

Great looking ring BDA and nice looking beach :) At least someones getting out.. I hope to next week for the first time in over a month...

BTW did the wind knock over your excal and scoop?

Every seventh wave is generally a bad one but sometimes you get two in rapid succession which is almost as bad. I jump up into the seventh wave, hurry back to my target area (which I have identified by digging two quick scoops) then I dig like crazy while keeping 1 eye out for waves. It's a bit of a race, look for waves, dig, check, look, dig, check, look, dig, check :yikes:LOOK OUT!, jump, refind target zone and repeat until target is in scoop. Then hopefully, SMILES!
Another trick I use when it's not too rough (max 4 foot waves) is to dig my scoop in deep at the target and when the next wave comes in just hold onto the scoop handle and ride out the wave. The resistance of your body will usually dig a scoop load for you as your body floats through the wave instead of getting bashed by trying to stand against the force of the wave. The wave actually helps you dig the hole and it doesn't hurt you or your gear (just make sure that you keep your detector clear of you floating body so you don't land on it). So your long handled scoop should do you proud, otherwise it is snorkel and fan with a chopped down dive fin the way GoldRinger does it.

Good Luck this Weekend,

PS You've got a Beautiful Island in Barbados with a long history, so Happy Hunting!

You my want to do a low pass first to clear the beach as it gets a little crowded on weekends when the weather is nice. It'll be in the 70's this weekend. Watch out for the seaweed as it will foul your landing gear.

Good Luck Max,

I spent several wonderful summers in Bermuda as a college student, doing research out of the Bermuda Biological Station for Research. Sounds like you live there. Lucky!

The first construction firm I worked with did the renovations to the Bio Station after Hurricane Fabian. That is one great plce to work, allright!
What was your area of specialization in marine biology?

Perhaps you should make a rough go of it more often. Looks like yer stuff gets stirred up a bit in the rough surf, savvy?

That loot didn't last long. I gave it to the daughter of a good friend of mine before she went back to boarding school in Scotland on the weekend. It's got to be tough to be away from family for 6 months at a time and I feel a little sorry for her. A real bright kid though and it sure put a smile on her face.
As for hunting in the washing machine, I'll take my licks to get to the loot but only to a point. It was getting a little unsafe out there when I finally decided to bail. I'll be back though.

Cheers Mate,
