leasing land & Ga. DNR

Well-known member
I posted this on another forum at this site and thought I would run it by Garrett site, also. I found a 100 acre site from the early 1900's and another 50 acre site that I want to metal detect when I get to feeling better. I am thinking of offering them $150.00 to $200.00 to try and lease these areas for my exclusive use, for a year. what gave me the idea is the 1st site already has a hunting and fishing lease and I thought since they had turned so many people down and did not want an army of metal detector people on their property, they might accept some money for the privelege. I know the 1st site would be worth it and believe the 2nd site would be worth it also.

The area to actually be detected is just 2-3 acres at the most. Both of these areas are in a state of decay and have fences and locks on them and I would be willing to sign a treasure hunting permit where I was responsible for my own safety, etc. Any feedback would be great. positive or negative. I realize this approach is unusual, but would show the land owners I was sincere and would leave the area better than I found it without large holes, etc.

the other thing is the Ga DNR requires you to have a signed permit from the landowners if you find any relics and I would want that to be in the permit, if I could get the lease. I'll have to check with Andy S. about the GA DNR, because he seems to know a lot about it. Judging by his posts on the bottle and relic forum. Maybe he will have time to help me, if I get permission to hunt these two properties. No need in asking until I find out who the owners are.

Both these sites saw a lot of people traffic and one of them was a popular tourist and local destination. Is the amount I mentioned of 150-200 too much or an insult? This probably sounds dumb as can be to most of y'all, but I believe it has merit. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

[size=small]I know nothing about leasing property to metal detect.
I suppose it goes on.
I believe that HIV, Hunting In Virginia, Civil War stuff
is on leased land.
I have never been tempted to buy a lease to hunt on.
If I did, I would have to be pretty darned sure I was going to get a decent return on my money.
I do not think offering $150-200 is an insult.
It's $150-200 they didn't have before.
If you go through with this
make sure they understand you are buying just the rights to metal detect and anything found while in that pursuit belong to you.
No sharing.
Look at this as asking permission to hunt.
The worst they can do is say no.
