Learning the Wet Sand Hunting ...

Hey Guys,

I have been reading allot on this site and have been getting better with finding targets with my Sea Hunter. With all the tips on here I have learned what to look for on a beach scape, such as the cuts in the beach line. Today I managed to find a cut down here in Jacksonville Beach, FL and pulled out some change at the base of the cut. It was only about 18"high but well... a start. We need a good storm to churn up the sand a bit. I was down at Flagler Beach and managed to find a silver ladies ring in the wet sand. Unlike my mxt. this machine just sounds off when there is something. The thrill is that you never have a clue what is down there until you dig it. As the water temp goes up I am looking forward to getting in the water about waist deep and learn how to recover in the waves. I just wanted to say thanks for all the posts out there and happy hunting. Marty

Stay on it my friend! The key to success is simply getting the coil over the treasure. Time and attention to detail will get you there,

Marty Thanks for Telling your story about your Sea Hunter, Mine is coming in the Brown Truck Monday, Did you ever try it in the Fresh water??? I think the Discret mode should work ok but loss a little depth??? At the ocean i plan on going with the Normal mode with 0 Disc, Can you give me some tips?? I just wanted to get a PI in with my VLF Detectors,
Thanks Marty, Mickfin

Hello Mick...

First off I have only hunted salt water with this detector so far. I have not tried fresh water yet, but it should be just fine in either. Concerning the different modes...

This detector is a no brain er to use. A great detector turn and go. In discreet trash elimination mode you have a nice silence except for a very slight threshold sound you set. When there is a target you get a nice beep sound. A double beep sound heard usually is a bobby pin, tent peg or a piece of wire. A coin for ring has a solid sound and a small detection range. When you sweep it if the sound heard has a broad range or it is hard to pin point it usually is a large object or trash. I set the discrimination around 2 or 3 in other words I do not want to miss anything. The higher the discrimination the less depth and it screens out more iron. Keep it low. I am digging every thing to get used to the detector. No ground balance necessary or available in this unit. I hip mount the unit around the waist and went to Home depot and got some Velcro loops with clips on them to hook up the detector yellow line to the belt. I made sure the detector can swing from side to side without any hindrance and have the coil wire long enough and slack enough so that when you let go of the detector to use the scoop the snap on the belt will not put pressure on the coil wire. In other words the detector just hangs off the belt, no breakage or pressure on the coil wire located under the detector box. I have another Velcro / clip on the left side to tether the scoop handle to it when going into the water waist deep.

Now concerning the standard threshold mode you will get a changing sound in the salt water (don't know about fresh water yet). I think you get a slightly deeper detection only because you can hear the change in the threshold sound. This mode is the best of the 2 modes to pinpoint but also is the most noisy. I have been using this mode because of the faint whispers I can hear, but the discrete mode is great also. I may hunt in discrete mode first and then pinpoint in standard mode to pinpoint. This detector goes deep. I have dug small fish hooks at 14".

Modifications to the shaft. First of all replace the fiber bolts that attach to the shaft with stainless steel nuts and lock washer style nuts. The upper shaft is held together with a single fiber bolt, - this stock design sucks to say the least, I just bought a stain. steel hose clamp and straddled it between the upper shaft and the black extension tube. It will tighten up the slop completely at the top. At the bottom where the coil shaft attaches to the grey tube I have not but will drill another hole in the extension tube to get the slop out of the lower shaft and attach another s/s bolt. If I find enough things with this detector IE gold/silver then I will probably invest in a straight custom shaft. I love the detector and the 8" coil is sufficient to find deep targets. The head phones are very comfortable to use and work well. Battery change out is a snap! I did find that the batteries do last long You get 4 beeps on the initial turn on of the detector, but when the batteries are ready to be changed the beep dropped off to only 1 beep. I thought the beeps would be graduated. IE 3-2-1. They went from 4 to 1 instead. The key is to go slow and keep the coil low to the ground, lengthen you shaft to set it up for your height and buy some 1/4" yellow poly line to attach to your scoop if you are going in the salt water. I think this detector should be fantastic in the fresh water also. Let me know what you think. Hope this helps. The more you use it the more you like it!! HH Marty
