learning the Compadre on the tot lots

Got out for four hours and hit two tot lots, took the Compadre today. This is the Compadre modified by changing to the 9 x 8 coil.

Found that I can not get as close to the poles as I can with the Cibola because I can turn the sensitivity down on the Cibola and get up real close. The standard Compadre with the smaller coil can probably get closer than the way mine is. I had two deep iron plates fool me. I also think I falsed on some mineralized muck as I dug a hole in one spot about 12 inches down and hit some slushy mud that I couldn't find anything in with the pin pointer, but sounded off faintly with the Compadre.

Discriminator thumbing on this detector is really good indicator and I don't have to wait a swing for it to settle when I thumb it like I have to wait for the Cibola or Tejon to settle after moving the discriminator.

First picture is all the stuff, second picture is the junk jewels. Got another junk ring.

13 nickels
31 pennies
2 Chuckie Cheese tokens
16 tabs ... and not too many foil pieces

If you are fining that much change in tot-lots they must not be hunted as much as the ones here. I see metal detectors on the ones here all the time and they are pretty clean. Of course that makes for hunting jewelry easier. Bill in Texas

Good points, Bill. I was thinking much the same things. Nice haul on the day with that Super Compadre.

Congrats on a very good hunt. I have never found that much $$ in a tot lot. Looks like you had a good one, Beale.

kd8hf, Good luck with your new detectors!

Bill, David and Beale,
The two lots I hit yesterday, most everything was about on the surface or in the 5 to 8 inch range. I last hit these two lots 13 months ago. This Compadre with the larger coil has really surprised me with it's depth. These two lots don't seem to get hit as hard as others that are a little closer to my house. There are two tot lots real close to my house that I regularly find nothing in the play area but pick up stuff crisscrossing the grass, ball and soccer fields.
Wish all happy hunting in the new year!

you did relly good , i,m impressed .. you would do well to get a high powered magnet you may have had some iron bits in that hole you can find them really easy take a 1" wide by 1/2" N-40 neodemium magnet cut the bottom out of a pill bottle remove the cap put the magnet in the hole put the cap back on then place the handle into the hole you cut off the bottom nail it on and thear you go nails and bits of iron just jump to it shur beats using a pinponter , And unless im hunting the suface 2" i hunt in all metal on my compadre gets better depth and somtimes you must remove the masking agent befor you can get to the good target sobalicly yours gunnar

Gunnar,
I have one area around the high school that I keep telling myself that I need a magnet to clean out. I will have to make one like yours.
Thanks for the design information!

I've always thought that one easy, inexpensive, useful change that Tesoro could make on the Compadre would be the inclusion of interchangeable coil capability. Your experience helps confirm this. (of course it might cut the volume of Silver umax sales)

Of course thats why you get the crapy 8" coil on the umax now you got to buy two more but aside from making my own detector thears not much we can do

I'm surprised at your comment on the 8" coil as I've had good results with it on 2 SSumax detectors and have seen them used on Eldorado umaxs and others at competition hunts with success. At any rate, I'm a firm believer in use what YOU like whether we all agree or not.

Well I have to agree that the 8X9 is a great coil, I like it a lot. Just haven't felt the 8" is a poor or bad coil as I've made some pretty good finds at decent depth with it. I suspect the reason the Silver comes with that one is to keep the price down. Actually, I'm also a fan of the 7" concentric - slips thru trash pretty well and has decent depth and is just plain nice to swing. I made a good buy on a 5.75" just about the time the snow started flying and the cold settled in so haven't had a chance to give that a good try yet, but I know a very trashy park near here that should be a good test for it when spring settles in.
