Learning more about my GQSSV2

Took the Goldquest out to the beach again this Sunday. Not too many good targets...it's been pretty bad so far this Winter. Found about 72 cents in pennies, dimes, 1 quarter... and 2 nickels ( which was good).

Learning this machine is pretty interesting. I am starting to get the hang of determininng shallow ( 1-6 inches) nails and elongated objects like wire and such. What I end up doing is as I am slowly swinging the coil, is to walk around the target. At some point, if it is an elongated object, the coil will be passing over the target parallel to it. When this happens, the signal ends up being a double beep. You can actually tell when the coil passes from one point of the nail to the other. When the coil passes perpedicular to the object, only a single beep occurs.

I tested this on about 15-20 targets, and ALL were nails or small, elongated bits of iron or steel.

Also, I figured out that the fainter, deeper targets that sound 'round' were just that. Deep coins, washers, buttons, snaps from jeans, etc.

Now I have to try to fashion a sand scoop out of wood and PVC since I have to sling my big Sun Spot scoop way behind me or the machine will hear it !!

Good thing I have a wooden handle on it...I just put the basket on my shoulder lots of times, but that is getting to be a pain.

I would spend $300 if someone came up with a very sturdy, non-metalic scoop !!!

Going back down Thursday. This machine is really fun.

Glad to see your enjoying your GQSSv2. Sounds like your getting it down pat. Next will come the gold!!!:jump:

John, how do you like using the 10" coil??Alot easier than the 11 on the HH right!!..I use to keep the scoop over my shoulder with that machine and one day i forgot myself and wore my work boots(steel toes!!=short day out!!)..Looks like youre getting a handle on the iron.thats half the battle-dig everything else.good luck, hope you hit gold soon,Ralph

Ralph,

The machine is a breeze to use and I am having fun with it. The 10 inch coil is perfect for how it balances the unit and for pin pointing. Glad you mounted it on the rod. I was thinking about the hip mount configuration but the way this rig is, I can swing it all day. I have been experiementing a little with the settings, but it runs so smooth at min reject, slow SAT that it's basically turn on and go. The only beach where I had to up the SAT was at a beach where the iron and black sand is abundant.

I am still digging everything and I am starting to learn the sound of the shallower targets so I don't dig too deep for them and waste time/energy. What is good is that if I wanted to, I could ignore them ( since I have found that most of them are the nails and trash) and go for the deeper sounding targets.

I hope you are getting out there and finding stuff. I got the entire day tomorrow to hunt, so lets see what happens. It's been slim pickens in the wet sand/suds on the beaches I hunt...most of the better stuff ( old coins ) have been in the dry on this one beach. Hopefully this warm weather spell has thawed out the dry sand. I won't use the GQ in the dry, but there may be some spots where there isn't too much trash and I can try it out there.

Hopefully I can post a pic of the good stuff tomorrow.

John
