learning from mistakes

OK,I go hunting with my neighbor who has been doing this for thirty years, and we went out the other day.We hunted a small strip of beach and I had gone over an area say 10x10meters or 1000sq ft whatever.I found 2 2euro coins,1 1euro coin and a couple of 20centers.
I thought I had gone over the area fairly well, zigzag first from the beach upwards, then zigzag parallel to the beach.
Then my neighbor goes over the same area, and he finds another 10 euros ,so I am obviously making some mistakes.
I'm thinking maybe I am not setting the the settings on the detector properly,or maybe not getting a proper signal if there is junk next to the coin.
I have the 705 and I use it in coin and treasure 3 mostly with discrimination at 25-27 for depth, threshold at 10-12,about halfway, and the coins plus on .
This has been my 7th time out hunting, and even though I have made some nice finds for a newb,I cant help but feeling that I am doing something wrong here.
Can someone with more experience give me any clues as to what my mistakes could be.

you could be swinging to fast, not overlapping your swings enough. Maybe your coil was too high above the sand?

just curious how long did it take you to cover this area? But I would have to guess you just went to fast and missed areas by not overlapping. This is the reason most places are never hunted out. A lot of people do not go slow enough to properly cover an area

Terry summed it up pretty good. Don't swing your coils too fast. No faster then a 3 to 4 sec swing speed. Overlap for swings. If your using a concentric coil I would say at least half of the coil. If your using a DD type coil you don't have to overlap as much and keep the coil close to the ground. Keep the coil no more then a 1/2" above the ground or right on the ground. Also you might try to lower your threshold some. For me, 10 to 12 is way too loud.

Keep working at it, you'll get better.

You got some good advice from both G4E and Mark. Lower the Threshold, hunt slower and overlap your swaths. Make sure you have a proper Noise Cancel Channel. And make sure you ground balance properly. On beaches, where you go from wet sand to dry sand, many folks will use the Ground Balance Beach mode. But be careful using it. Although it does a good job of neutralizing the effects of both magnetic and conductive sand, it can totally reject lower conductive targets in areas with a lot of trash.

In an effort to help you out, I have a few other questions.....
Which coil were you using?
How did you ground balance and what was the ground phase reading?
You said you had the discrimination at 25 - 27 for depth? Did you mean Sensitivity?
When you said you had coins plus on, were you talking about TID Stability?

Sounds like you are on the right track. Afterall, you are finding coins! Now it is just a matter of better understanding the functionality of the 705 and applying proper techniques to the site. HH Randy

ground balance and don't set the treshold so high, I am hard of hearing and do just find with a setting of 5, I can hear a slight hum, 10-12 is way to high, you will miss the deep targets.....Good luck. John

I am using the 10.5 inch dd coil for the moment and use the auto ground balance for beach mode. I have not attempted to ground balance manually yet.
Digger,my mistake,Sensitivity at 25-27 with TID stability.
I try and keep the coil as low to the ground as possible, maybe even on the ground as much as I can,but I don't think I overlap so much.I will focus more on that..
The area mentioned took me roughly forty five minutes to cover.I wasn't timing myself,so I am guessing.
Here is a pic of some Spanish silver I found on one of the beaches we were at the other day. Sorry I could not upload the image but there is a link.
Could it be that I am on to something with these finds?I wonder where I can get more info on the ring.
Thanks for the help.I will pay more attention to details from now on.

If this is a Saltwater Ocean beach, DO NOT, let the coil touch the damp or wet sand, it will cause a false signal in the detector. Keep the coil about 1 inch(3cm) above the sand. Keep the coil parallel to the sand through out the swing, no upward arc at the end of the swing, nor downward dive into the sand. Consistent coil height and swing speed is important for stability. If you use a coil cover make sure to clean it out after every use.

Good coil technique is very important for best performance on Ocean beaches.
