Learned something new

Yesterday I went hunting in an area where in the past all the waste coal cinders were spread out on the school lawn. This material causes my F75 to chatter only when the coil is in motion. Reducing sensitivity and increasing discrimination doesn't seem to help. Changing frequencies had no effect on the amount of chatter. But changing to the AM mode allowed me to pull 5 rings and several coins from an area that I had hunted extensively over the past 4 years with both the Tesoro Vaquero and Tejon.
I did some test each time I found a good target by switching to disc mode and adjusting down to 0 with other setting combinations. Most of the time in discrimination mode the target either disappeared or became erratic in the audio response. Some of the targets could be heard if I would lower the discrimination down to 0, but there were two times where even at 0 discrimination the target didn't give a good enough response to prompt me to dig.
Hope this helps.

I hunt an area in Northern California that's next to a volcano, and the ground mineralization makes a LOT of noise in disc mode, but in AM mode, it's smoooooth as butter. Luckily there's very few targets at this spot, so it works out great as AM mode is tough on your brain at a target laden site.

I was at awe when the rings started coming up.

I wish they could take AM to a new level...When you use it in an area that has a lof of targets you have to be glued to the machine. The mono tone is more my cup of tea.

Brian,

You're right on - all metal is great IF you can get to a site that has a low enough density of targets so your brain doesn't get fried. Or just turn the volume down and move SLOWLY. The fact that all metal also gives an ID is a plus. - Jim

By turning the threshold down into the negative numbers I greatly reduced the small trash (small pieces of foil) in the area. After using the AM mode for any length of time you can tell if it's a good sounding target or not. I only looked at the ID after listening to the audio. I do agree if the area has a lot of target it would be to much to listen to, but the negative threshold has helped me a lot. So far I've only used AM on one school yard with the cinder problems.

I'm a tone id junkie and tend to forget the all metal mode unless I'm looking for something tiny. Thanks for giving it another perspective.

I do find it hard to use AM mode in a junky area, but if I get a iffy signal I will sometimes confirm it by switching from DE to AM mode as it seems to give a more stable signal.
