Leaking Excalibur?

I posted this on the Beach forum but I am getting no responses so I thought I would try here.

The black band on the outside of my Excal 1000's battery pack came loose today. No big deal. It did allow me to see part of the battery housing that I had never seen before and what I saw has me a little concerned. There is a black rubber seal inside the battery housing just behind the threaded connector. This divides the battery housing into two compartments. The compartment that holds the battery is perfectly dry. However, the small compartment between the threaded connector and the seal is full of water.
Has anyone else experienced this?
The detector seems to be functioning properly for the time being but I am concerned about possible corrosion. I hunt mostly freshwater but what happens if saltwater gets in there when I travel to the beach?

It is very important that when you are thru detecting you completely clean your unit by hosing it thoroughly, headphones, stems too with fresh water, this is especially important if you have been in the Salt water. You can remove the black cap, setscrews and endcap if you wish and clean this housing, lube the O ring with the proper grease then reinstall after inspection and cleaning. Be very careful when putting the setscrews back in by not overtightening. I use a little silicone sealer after to fill the remaining hole, after this dries I wrap the housing split with adhesive tape, reinstall the black cap and put it back to work...If there was no salt water contamination inside the housing I would say you are OK....Geo
