lead sinkers

GO VA

New member
I bought an AT-PRO a few months back and will be doing my first water hunt this weekend at a fresh water lake that has a lot of people fishing around and on the beaches in the spring and fall while they are closed, so I figure I will be hearing a lot of led fishing weights and want some advice so I do not spend my time going from one sinker to the next with little success on good targets. I have been a land hunter for almost 5 years now ( F-75) and love it but every time I have tried using it in knee deep water it seems the majority of my finds are trash/sinkers. I am still learning the language of the AT but have had good results in the dirt and hope it will carry over to the water. There may be no good answer to this question and that is what I expect but hope I am missing something because to my ears lead on both machines seems to be a clean, crisp and solid dig me tone.

It really all depends on the size of the sinkers. I'm no expert with the tiny sinkers, but from 1oz - 5oz sinkers, they ring up anywhere from the 60's all the way up into the low 80's. Earlier this year I hit a secluded beach and must've dug about 20lbs worth of sinkers in a 3 hour hunt. I didn't really mind digging them because I cash in the lead at my local scrap yard for $$$. I put the $$$ towards future detecting accessories. I do the same with scrap brass, copper, aluminum and zinc after I'm convinced the item is trash or not worth anything historically. Best thing you could do in my opinion is get a few sample lead weights and do an air test on each. It will give you an upper hand before you make the trek to the water. I'm not sure if your area had a lot of Civil War activity or not, but you may find civil war bullets fashioned into lead sinkers and that would be cool! GL and HH :)

Eric in r Gave you good advice and good info, I have been using a at pro for the past three years and I keep all sinkers it pays for some of my expenses so keep on digging all 60s and 70s one of them could be gold.good luck and keep swinging:super:

If there's good mixed up in a bunch of trash, you pretty much have to clean up the bad to get to it. Stinkers are a lot better than tabs, like the guys just said , you can sell them. Imagine telling a friend to go dig them for you. Think he would leave the gold? Sounds like you got a good place to put the Pro into. Take all the good and iffy signals first, then start finding what's under or beside the bad signals. Dig a thousand targets, bet you'll be able to give us a few tips.

Thanks for all the replies everyone. Had to go to work this morning but hope to put a coil in the water tomorrow.

totally agree

I have dug a lot of lead sinkers and civil war bullets of different sizes. The smaller lead usually come in around the low 50's and the medium in the 60's and the larger ones in the 70's. Your dimes and copper pennies will usually come in higher and the nickels should be around 53 if they are shallower. I would dig the lead also.
