LAWS Oregon Beaches

TURNMASTER

Active member
I read some of the laws for the state of Oregon ocean beaches as I will be on them for a few days next week and am taking my X705 with me. I am in hopes of getting a few hours of beach hunting in. The laws seem rather repressive to me. One law says you can metal detect on any Oregon beach. Another says any money or valueable found on an Oregon beach must be turned over to the parks director. Then there are Oregon st. salvage laws which could smooth out a real cool, big find and give sole ownership. You must leave any shipwrecks and historic finds alone and contact the state, refer back to salvage laws.

It would seem that the state of Oregon LEAGALY MUST BE INVOLVED in anything you do in regards to the hobby except actually running your metal detector.

Does any one know if I am actually reading these rules correctly or am I out to lunch?

Do they really want that $10 silver ring or $1.53 in change that badly?

I am not thinking that I would be able to call the state if I found a gold coin that was lost some generations ago. WOULD YOU?

Better to ask forgivness than permission, I always say. Now, if I were in another country where I can't demand a cookie with my meal, well, that's another story. Dah.:usaflag:

Good Luck

I spent a little time in Oregon. All you had to do was go to the closest State Park and ask the folks in the office for a permit. It's free. I think they just want to keep track of whose hunting so they can track you if something important ends up missing. I did Seaside last week end. Went to the PD to ask if it was OK to use the detector on the beach and nobody was home. I then went to the visitor's bureau and asked an employee there. Without hesitation I was given permission to hunt any of their parks or beaches. Several hours later I saw a park employee servicing a rest area and asked if I could detect there. He said, "Sure! Just cover all your holes." Told him if he even knew I was there, after I got done, I would have done something wrong. Hope that helps! Jim

Well yes to both and I know you can hunt ocean beaches there. However as near as I can tell you may keep very little, the way I read the rules all money and anything of value must be turned over. Now I doubt that many of the states park employees know the rules or actually care if you take your finds home.
Better to ask forgivness than permission, is kind of the way I would work it anyhow. Not all laws are Moral or Just.

NC law is the same way (no permit required) just no hunting in state parks period (this will encompass all Tarheel state parks!!!! ) On the state beaches(considered a state park) it goes to the state period ( jewelry/ coins /zinc/lic's and the like)!!! Per the state commsioner of nc state parks any find's belong's to the state/ on state property (Here comes the bobby-pins), Always ship them under "media" (that would b illegal) it's cheaper! We make the efforts / We find for the fun and ............! Oh well Just don't post the finds! Keep your mouth shut while having Good luck digging and Great find's!! Oh ya just don't tell other's exactly where the find(s) occured the state has a habit of taking control of that area if there is a good find's (and it leaks out to the public) like pull tabs, bottle caps, foil. ......!!!! Ha HA HA!! Big Brother in action!! gottit!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I THINK MOST OF US ARE ON THE SAME PAGE ON THIS ONE.......A SMALLER GOVERNMENT IS A BETTER GOVT. WASHINGTON ISN'T MUCH BETTER. (MAYBE WORSE IN SOME WAYS)

AND YES I ALWAYS ASK TO HUNT PRIVATE PROPERTY AND GET PERMITS WHERE NEEDED

MY WIFE WAS REAL LEARY ABOUT ME TAKING MY DETECTOR, TO BIG (FITS IN BACKPACK WITH TOOLS), NO FAMILY TIME AND THE LIKE. BUT MY KID WANTS TO TAKE IT AND THAT = FAMILY TIME, TOLD HER I WOULDN'T RUN OFF BY MYSELF.... CAN'T IMAGINE BEING ON THE COAST WITH NO BEEPER. SHEESH...

THANKS FOR THE INPUT.
