Now I'm back to the weird stuff.....any ideas?

There appears to be some kind of crystalline structure embeded in the crevice end of the item.

Is this metallic??? Looks like pieces of aluminum I have seen after being struck by lightning...

HH,

It was found with a metal detector but is not magnetic. It is similar to lead in weight and too heavy for aluminum.

thanks but not concrete as it reacts to a metal detector and material is very dense...not brittle

Basalt can be detected with a metal detector. Basalt sounds differently than a hunk of lead or iron, but it does sound off. It looks like something that bubbled up from the earth, from a spring, mud pot, or thermal vent, etc.

Have you preformed a scratch test on it, what were the results? It definitely looks like a mineral, one that progressively bubbled up from a thermal vent or something, and then cooled.

I know nothing about basalt....

From what you say....it appears like this could be something "created" like that. No scratch test. What should I do?

thanks J

It's actually called a hardness test, follow this link and perform the test and then please let us know the results:

Hi James! I believe your pics are of melted lead finds from a smelter like St. Joe Lead Company's when they mined the lead and then smelted it! My dad worked as a janitor at the Smelting Plant in Southeast, MO during the 50's and 60's before he had to quit because of Emphysema and other health problems! He collected several of these pieces of lead and after mom and he passed away in 1984 I have them now or did, as they are in many different forms and are pretty shapes, so sold many in garage sales...but I think some wanted them for their fish tanks, but being lead I don't think that was a good idea but never thought about it then! I hope this helps as this ole lady does error in many ways, but sure do look like what I had inherited from dad's estate! Ma Betty

sorry for the delay.....

Betty....thanks for the info.....does the ones you have .....have some kind of crystalline structure pieces in the end of it.....in other words....there's like big pieces of like sugar/salt embedded in this piece. I will try to take a new pic that shows this better.

What do you think?

I had goofed and couldn't get back on the Finds Forums until recently! I don't remember anything being embeded into the molten pieces that I had but if I have some left and I can find them I will try to check them and also post a pick for you....I am a collector and have no idea where anything is because of moving stuff around too often and when I hide something it is usually hidden too well for me to find again!  Hope you get the answer to your finds! Ma Betty

thanks and welcome back!
