I wish to purchase a second-hand Explorer XS, and am wondering how to ensure I get the newer version that's not prone to cracking. Also, are there other things to watch out for.
Thanks,
B

Hello B
i don't know how it is in the . But in Europe you can send the minelab to the factory if it's an old one and they will renew it without costs. Otherwise you can see it at the display. If the menu and back buttons are very close to the grip it's an old version, when it's at least 1 cm it is a new one.
Best regards Michiel

I sent my first one in and they charged me $30 for an hour labor, but they did all kinds of things to mine. It was pretty roughed up. They did me right for a second hand detector! I won't list everything, but it was a lot more than the new unbreakable housing!
As far as telling new ones from old. First, obviously inspecting it to see if there are any cracks. Second, they changed the manufacture of the LCD screen and they had to change the software. (Only because of the screen, other than that there is no difference) The original ones are dated 1999 on the start up screen. The backlight is more of a blue also instead of green. The new ones are dated 2000 (I belive it says sept 00) on the start up screen. Just because it says 00 on the start up screen does not mean it has a newer housing, but it wasn't long after that they started using the new housing. That is a pretty good gauge though. Of course both of mine are dated 1999 and one has a new housing and the other doesn't yet.
I would say the absolute best way to know for sure would be to call Minelab in Las Vegas and give them the serial number of the one you are thinking about buying and ask if it has the new housing or not. If you get it cheap enough though, I wouldn't worry about it. Mine without the new housing has almost one whole side of the camlock gone and still holds together fine.
Better get one quick, there are quite a few Explorers getting ready to Raid one of your old parks in Chicago Tomorrow!

Thanks for the wonderfully informative post! I will save it for reference when I am buying. I think it will take awhile for all the parks to get raided, so I have at least a couple weeks!

Just out of interest I have two Explorer XS machines on carries the 8" coil.
Neither machine shows any sign of cracking anf Iam out 2 or 3 times each week.Jerry.
