i called garrett to get info they told me i have a mid 60's origanal THE HUNTER ser # 1ULO wondering if anyone might have an idea of value works perfect

WTG sub with acquiring one of the earlier Garrett BFO models, I've often heard if the control box has a P.O. Box instead of an address then its one of the first models made from Garretts garage.

Sadly, These old Garrett BFO detectors don't get the attention they deserve. They sell anywhere from $50 bucks for a model with one coil on up to $100-125.00 with an extra coil, The complete mint package deals with wooden carry case and all coils then it gets serious looking at $175.00 - $200.00 bucks easy.

If possible, please post some pics of the old BFO. Like to see your model. I have two of the earlier Hunter models, one with 1THO the other HRR stamped underneath, both built like Sherman tanks.

Here's a few pics, have other size coils stored away. Still use these once in a while.

frist paul i would like to say thank you for your response...i will post pics. as soon as i get a smart phone or other source.. my m/d looks like the pic. on the right where as the unit is more horizontal then being vertical. also while i was talking with Garrett they did say that yes the p.o.box is from when he still built out of his garage......lastly im sending you my email addr. so not to waste all the chat in here i would love to know more about the hunter an how to use it properly mostly concerning the tuning knob does this knob turn an turn or does it have a stop an start point i have used it twice since i bought it only for a few minutes found 2 beer twist off caps a chunk of pig iron an a gem filled glass tube with a silver top but the neckless was no were to be found
robertconnor31@yahoo.com THANK YOU subcultral...

What you often see with multi-turn controls is they hae a slip-clutch at the ends of travel. So it will hit the stop and you should notice a bit more turning resistance, but you can turn the knob forever at that point and it won't hurt the control, it just won't change any further.

Back it off the other way until you get the meter pointer to be where you want. If you have to turn it to the extreme and it still won't adjust properly, something may be wrong. The fact you are detecting objects says it's working, so just try to find the sweet center-point.

thanks ed one last question when tunin what is the difference from the deep tone and the high pitch tone ....is that the way yoyu can discrimante cauce i tend to tune it to the deep sound just above where it makes no sound at all

sorry once agian in need of help just returned from detecting i was pickin up the smallest piece of foil 7-8 inches deep but still not even a penny still need help with tuning my m/d.....an i mean like over 10-12 hits.........i am sorry bout all the info needed but there is no instruction on this old garrett.......lastly there is 1 potenchimanator on curcit board WHAT does it control ....i thought it was volume but its not and like a fool i adjusted it ..

I don't own one, but the BFO design is operated pretty much the same, one maker to the next. Use the Tuning to put the meter in the center and set it for a low tone, that being more sensitive than a high tone as it's easier to tell subtle changes.

You'll notice in the very center of tuning, it'll be quiet, and give a low tone as you slowly turn it in either direction from center. Normally, you want non-ferrous reading to the right on the meter and ferrous (iron) signals move the meter pointer to the left.

Toss down a penny, some foil, a nail, bottlecap, whatever for a test to see how it behaves on something that you know what it is.

If you opened it up and messed with an internal control that's not accessible from the outside, whoops! It might be a sensitive adjustment and hard to find where it ought to be. I guess there's only so many tweaks to its position and if you can test it on a target till it seems about right, that's probably close enough. But you may find other problems like drifting, etc. until you get it returned to the correct spot.
