Last Wednesday I went back to the woods....

where I got the 14K bracelet a while back. Went when it was light out to avoid the landmines

Spent a lot of time digging shells again but managed a few cool things.

Some kind of mega axehead!

A real nice brass bell and a whatsit. Found a couple of theses before but not sure what they are.

Some other stuff including a little silver, musket ball, flat button, horse decoration and a set of keys with personalized tag. The old Canadian militia button is nice.

Can any of you older guys, (Deathwind, Vernon, Ed) give me an idea when the key might date to? I'm going to try to track the guy down.

Thanks for looking & GH, Chris

... If the length isn't too short, the whatzit might be a Medieval purse ring. The photo below is one I dug many years ago in England.

I first thought it was the forearm ring for a rifle or pistol .... but if for a rifle, the loop for the sling would be turned the wrong way and that loop does not swivel. My second guess was that it might be some type of harness hardware. Not having a clue, I sent a photo off to Ask Mark Parker at W&E Treasures Magazine. He ID'd it for me as a Medieval purse ring.

During Medieval times, pockets were not yet invented and folks carried a drawstring bag as a purse for coins. The top of the bag was secured to the purse ring and the purse ring was worn on a belt.

When pockets became common, there was no longer any use for purse rings so most were just discarded / thrown away. Wonder howw yours got to Canada?

The keys are machine cut, thus would guess they may be no older than early 1900's.

Looked in the phone book and no one at that address. I was hunting about 6 miles from the adress so he must of had a long walk home  The whatsit is about 3" long. I'm leaning towards buggy or gun part.

It was common on older G.M.'s,as the key got worn, chances are,it may start another G.M. with a little wiggling!
