Yesterday I went to a popular Recreation park to try my luck. I'd been wanting to give this site a go for a long time. First I double checked with one of the maintenance crew to let someone know what I'd be doing. He was very jovial and totally cool with it. I've noticed that city park workers don't seem to have a problem with it. I worked slowly and took forever to get through only small areas leaving most of the park untouched at this point. I am so slow I know I would not make a good competion hunter as I procrastinate on every tone checking it this way and that before I dig. By the end of the day several hours later I had accumulated 56 cents in change. Two quarters, one a Utah statehood, a nickel and a penny.Other items of interest included a pair of tweezers, a flag lapel pin, and a perfectly good working Bic sharpwriter mechanical pencil. And, of course junk. It's a sizable enough park to provide a lot more trips.
Today I went down to the waterfront park where the fireworks are held every year quite naively expecting to clean up. I selected a place near the concert stage where I knew from experience was always crowded during these events and started swinging. Slowly. I noticed two other MD'ers on the other side of the park, and from a distance I could tell one was using a Whites and the other by it's distinctive profile appeared to be a Garret Master Hunter. After several hours I only ended up with 28 cents of which 2 were nickels. One of them was a Louisiana statehood nickel. I don't know what year this came out and the date was unreadable. The rest were pennies and mostly zincs. However I did end up with 6 copper-bronze ones. I was pleasantly surprised to find when I got them cleaned off at home to discover that the oldest was a 1950D. And would'nt you know it I managed to put just the slightest scratch on it. Oh well. I managed to come away with several interesting, if valueless pieces of jewelry. One was an ear clip with fake diamonds, but hey, my first sparkler even if it is a fake. Also 2 pink breast cancer lapel pins, and a floret style lapel pin with stem but minus the attachment screw that reads on the reverse: Altero 380-8. I've no idea what it's significance is.
I also met some nice people today. Some wanted to know if I had seen this or that lost object from the night before ( glasses, camera) but unfortunately I could'nt help them.
Not long before I called it a day one lady asked if I had found anything and mentioned that she "had seen a lot of people out here with their meters today"
Oh. Well that explains it. The early birds took my worms.
