We've been lucky to have periods of rain and snow that helps soften the ground in otherwise tough soil! I've been busy lately with several different things happening all at once and haven't been able to post anything as a result.
Last three hunts have been at local parks - and getting to the deeper coins is much easier thanks to Mother Nature!
Have had some success with using Reactivity 2.5 Silencer 1 in the trashier sections of the parks. The aluminum in these areas is small and widespread, so one day I decided to use a boatload of Notch to try and help pick out some winners....in short, it works!
Here are my recently-used settings:
4Khz
Sens 85
Disc 0
Full Tones
Reactivity 2.5
Silencer 1
Notch 00-50, 96-99
Manual GB 85
Notch Ground 85-90
ID Norm = OFF
I've gotten away from using the highly negative GB settings in favor of some stability and slightly better audio quality. With these settings I'm still able to hit 8" deep coins, where Reactivity 3 doesn't quite reach that far in our soil. Some beavertails and aluminum still gets through, but the deeper coins (mostly Wheats) will for the most part come through faintly - enough for me to investigate!
Last three times out I've managed silver coins, including a surprise 1944 Washington quarter that was co-located with a large piece of cast iron. I will have to go back to where this quarter was, dig out the large iron target, and then re-scan that immediate area. The iron is large enough to be masking more coins, but I didn't have time then to further investigate.
Another surprise was a deep Buffalo nickel, and on another occasion I dug a deep V nickel from around 8". Although the high notch settings will effectively silence shallow nickels, foil, gold rings, and the like....deep nickels (beyond 7" or so) don't get notched and "ring up" as a higher-conducting coin. Maybe it's the round shape that the software latches onto - maybe something else entirely, but it's something to keep in the back of your head while detecting!
Looking to kick off May with another hunt lined up for Thursday!!!
