Last Sunday's finds

Mark in S.E. IA

New member
Sunday I went to check out a fairgrounds and on the back side of the parking lot their was some piles of dirt so I hit them and found a Merc and 3 wheat's. In about the middle of the place is where they dug out that dirt and had it back filled with gravel. The area was about the size of 20' x 30' and the gravel was only 2' to 4" deep so I hit that area too. On the first pass I found a 1917 Buff, then a Merc, then a Barber dime and on my last pass I found another Merc. By the time I got done working those area's it was late so I headed home.

I think I know where I'm going MDing next weekend, lol

thanks for lookin

Nice bunch of coins!

If i understand correctly, all those coins came from a 20X30 foot area including the dug out dirt piles?
If so, that relatively small area in the fairgrounds has an amazing amount of older coins.

Was that area previously black topped before the digout? That might explain why those coins were still there.
Or
Maybe either a virgin site or for some reason those coins before the digout were too deep or difficult to detect.

In any case looks like you got a very productive site there.

nice job sniffing out the tearout....and of course the coins!!!!! I've managed 4 silvers chasing a little bit of dirt work at our old ballpark lately....

Yes, all the coins and the piles of dirt come from that 20' x 30' area. The piles of dirt had a lot of sod in them so I guessing their was nothing covering this area up so that you would not be able to MD it.
After they dug the dirt out they back filled that area with gravel. The gravel was anywhere from 2" to 4" deep and the coins were a 1" to 3" below the gravel.
So I would say the coins in the grass area around this area that they dug out are 5" to 8" deep, but I think their is a lot of trash in this area too.
I might need to buy a smaller coil to work this place but I'm going to give it a try with the stock coil and go slow.

Great picture! Congratulations on some good looking finds!
