Last hunt for the year.

In stead of a 10 hour work day, they let me off in 8. That gives me about one hour of day light to MD.

I hit an older house that I went over two times before with my Ace 250. Reason being my Ace got a few wheat's at 7 " with a little quirk that I learned with it and wanted to learn a few quirk with the F-70.

The Ace jumps from iron to cent for a deep penny. It jumps form iron to high silver it is iron. I knew I cleaned this place out with my Ace. I wanted to see what was deeper and play around hoping to discover a few quirks with the F-70.

The first thing I learned is hot rocks are still a problem for me. They hit in the silver range mostly soft and sporadically. So do deep coins. This place has so many hot rocks that when you dig a target it could get lost in the loose dirt. I mean no more id of the target. I just spread the dirt out till it ID's again. I tried to hear the difference in target sound, but my hearing is really bad. Is there really a sound on the threshold?

All my finds in the total were over 7". When I located a target I would put the coil on the ground to try to get an realistic true depth. When I did so most cents were around 9". I found two clads and 5 wheat's in that range. !919, 1939, 1940,1947 and 1958-d. Not that I;m crazy about wheat's, but they indicate what other goodies can be found. My wheat count was down this year. I just added it up and it came to 177 wheat's. Work is really cutting into my MD'ing. Something has got to give. Last year I got over 220 wheat's and found lots more older coins and tokens. I got 8 IH's this year and a few barbers. Odd find was a 1897, 2 Heller. Oldest button was an 1850's Egyptian motif. Here is my last finds for 2008.

I also found 1 1956 silver dime.

I also got cloths weight, gold plated key chain? It was only an hour hunt.

Wow! John.

If you can do that in an hour I can just imaging what you can do in several :yikes:

Do you have a electronic pinpointer? Certain ones could help with the hot rocks and recoveries.

Having good sites is always a big help. I have been MD'ing houses that are being demo-ed to make way for a new hi-way. I am at a stand still. They have a bunch that are emptied, but they aren't demo-ing any more houses for a while. I haven't had much time to MD so I re hit these houses. I don't have to ask permission, just stop and MD. One end of the street has older houses than the other. I have pulled lots of coins from the 1800's out of there.

I sorry to say I would be lost without my pin pointer.

Great stuff, John. I havent really tested the F70 for severe depth, yet. It has been too erratic to run the numbers up until yesterday.
We will see what happens in the near future. 9" is pretty deep on a cent, that's for sure.

I'm curious, would a magnet work on your hot rocks? It wouldn't help you ID them in the ground but once you got them out you could know them for sure and maybe start to learn a pattern?

I had some high tone hits yesterday that seemed like deep coins, but just plain disappeared once I got the dirt out. I learned a long time ago not to sweat these things and a good detector like the F70 should be trusted. If it saw something that I broke up, then it was nothing to start with.
But I'd like to know how to spot the difference between a small ferrous "blob" or hot rock hit - and something deep and good. Would going to the dP mode or some other setting help?
