Haven't been as diligent in posting finds as I ought to be the last couple weeks. I've included the highlights and left out the pile of 45 wheaties which were mostly from the 40's and 50's.
There are a couple rings, one sterling with a little stone in it. Looks pretty old, but don't know. The other seems homemade and came in around 10-23. It seems to be a silver and gold wire twisted together and soldered. Neither wire is corroded in any way and it was at the same depth as coins I was finding from the 40's. ??
A couple items that were highlights for me are the Indian Head Ring and the Merc Dime. The Ring is child sized, neat looking though, has like a 3-D IH on it. Hope the photo does it good.
As for the Merc dime, well. I picked up a thin signal solidly in the bottom third of the depth meter. It had that nice deep high tone that made me think it was a silver coin and was reading within a digit either way of 11-46. I cut a deep plug, flipped it back and pinpointed a target still in the bottom of the hole. I loosened and removed a couple more inches of black dirt out of the bottom and found a shiny silver coin laying at the bottom at the 9" mark. It still had some dirt on it and I was hoping for a Barber or earlier because I hadn't found anything old in the yard so far. Lifting the coin out by the edges revealed a well worn Mercury dime. A date wasn't obvious so I pressed along the rim at the dirt attached to the face and a chunk dropped off revealing the date, 1916 ! It was readable even without my reading glasses.
I have to admit that a wave of excitement passed through at the sight of the 1916 on the Merc, for we all know as coin collectors, of the prize of all Mercury dimes, the 1916-D. Could it be? I flipped over the coin squinting to focus along the bottom edge of the back. It looked like something was there, could it be? I couldn't tell. Rats, I needed my glasses. There was some dirt there that I didn't want to rub off for fear of putting some fine scratches into the surface of a very valuable coin. Oh man! It would have to wait until I was home.
I took some pictures for all of you! Check it out for yourselves. And some of the other little odds and ends from various hunts
Best of luck to all of you.
