Last Few Hunts

Between the rain and work I have not been able to get out on a long hunt, just an hour or two here and there. The pocket watch case and the small pill box came out from under a porch on an old house that is being redone. I was surprised how well the gold plating held up. The inside of the case has "B & B Royal Waranted 20 Years" I could not find much info on the net, but I believe it was made in the late 1800's to early 1900's. I found the two Indians and the worn disc in the center is actually my first Shield Nickel. I could barely see some of the shield and the 5 when I pulled it up, but it's toast. Picked up the some of the wheats and both mercs at a lot next to where an old school was and I got the rosie and the chopped up wheat yesterday, from an abandoned house that I have hunted before. The forecast is calling for a good chance of rain for the next 7 days, may not be able to go much this week either. HH David

Those are some very nice finds. I especially like the relics. Finding a compact case or pill case always gets my heart racing. I can't imagine what it felt like when you first saw that pocket watch case.

Nice watch case. I am still waiting on my first shield nickle.

Nice find's, Dave & congrat's on your first shield nickel. Most of mine have been toast, too!

Thanks.I have found a few compact cases and pill boxes, but none have had a surprise coin inside. I am always hoping they will. The watch case had a lot of gold showing through the mud and was exciting to see. This is the first one I have found with that much plating intact.

The rain held up and I was abe to get in a very nice hunt after work today. But it will be here all day Saturday. Good luck and I hope you find some Big Silver at that Old Fairgrounds!

Great finds. I'm curious about the depth of the items you found under the porch. It has always been my contention that coins and relics don't actually sink that much and that they become deep by the buildup of vegetation growing and being cut over the top of them year after year. If I am right the items you found under the porch shouldn't have been very deep but if I'm wrong the should be as deep as if you had found them in a yard.

Thanks, not deep at all just under the surface. I have always thought the depth of coins and relics depends on soil type, weather, vegetation and other factors. Today I dug coins 40-50 years old at twice the depth of 100+ year old coins and CW lead in the same 30' x 30' area of a yard. That's what I have come across in my area.

Very nice finds !
