Last few hunts with the Equinox 800

JimmyCT

Well-known member
I have been running Field 1 & 2 Multi-frequency, 50 tones, iron bias 3, recovery 6 (7 or 8 if its an iron horror show) and most recently in the last two hunts I have been running with tracking ground balance.

One thing I would like to say is the Equinox 800 runs fantastic in iron. I see a little of the Sovereign in this machine. On deep targets I noticed that if I perform the "Equinox Wiggle" the target tone ramp right up like they did on the Sovereign. I am impressed with the 11" coil to see it sniff out targets in trashy areas.

Determining if its a deep non-ferrous or iron signal: What I have learned so far -

I noticed that IF the signal "holds together" and the tones stay pretty consistent, I have a good target or TARGETS. ( TID will be jumping wildly from 24,25-30,35 - I see it happening but ignore it. I just dig as I know its a non-ferrous item in the iron ) When I hear the tones fizzling and kind of "melt out " after performing the wiggle, I am over iron. (I dug a boatload of iron to understand this.) It's possible I may revise this in the future but as off right now, this is what I am finding.

Always scan your holes / immediate area after retrieving your target with this machine and that's all I will say about the subject. I know I have mentioned this before however its definitely worth repeating. Once you discovered what I have discovered, you'll understand why I am stating this.

Go find one of your well beaten hunting grounds and have fun.:)

Fine pocketful of goodies there elp.... ive got the 800 on my radar and the mortgage is paid off, i just get the wifeys blessing lol... if your finds are this good now i cant wait till the vegetation dies off...

Sweet finds I hit an old fairground today got some decent silver!

Wow, nice pile of coins you have there. I know that "wiggle" seems self explanatory but please describe the wiggle so can I understand it better. Is it just a quicker little sweep, back and forth, maybe 2-3 inches side to side over the target (high tone) to better flush it out?

Thanks,
Dan

No problem Dan.

Actually it's a smaller footprint then that. Maybe an inch directly over the suspect target AND I sweep a little bit quicker then what I was scanning in the field. (Sometimes even quicker depending on how much iron there is) IF (the big IF) I can keep that tone rather consistent, I'm digging. This also means I might be walking around the target to isolate what I believe is a good target. Don't pay too much attention to the TID because its going to be jumping all over. Some of those wheat pennies I found jump wildly back and forth when a lot of iron is involved but the tone is key. If you perform this maneuver and the signal kind of "melts out" and moves slightly most likely you are over iron.

Another tidbit of info: if your in a lot of iron and hear a high tone blip, take a few extra second and hit the target from different angles. Such as just walking around the target real quick while scanning. This has also netted me some old coins as well. This machine is pretty amazing and its trying to teach me what it wants me to know - IF I allow it to. Amazing what this machine can do in iron. Not hyping the machine just mere observation.

What I have found in quite a few circumstances:

I find the iron bit with my pin pointer thinking, "did I just get fooled?" I then grab my detector and scan over the area and I am still receiving a good signal. I will then find another small bit of iron or a nail and think, "I just wasted my time pulling out another piece of junk." I scan the hole again with the detector and sure enough that tone is still telling me something is there....
This has happened to me many times. Just make sure after you pull out the non-ferrous item to check the hole again (with the detector) and make sure there is nothing left behind. Something else might suddenly appear. (it has for me :) ) <--- true story that has happened multiple times to me.

side note:

I know some do not run iron bias like I do (I keep it at 3) but without it I was digging nails 10" to 12" + deep and that became very tiring. They all sounded beautiful just like a deep high conductor. Even at an iron bias setting of 3, I still dig nails but nowhere like I was when I first started.

Hope this helps. If not, you can always pm me and I will do my best to answer your question(s).

Thanks BHPA and congratulations on your wife's blessing! I have a feeling you are going to really like this machine. Many do not like the pinpoint but I think its dead-on. Something I didn't care for with the Sovereign. Its an extreme versatile machine, gets very good depth and it takes names and kicks iron! Best of luck with your new machine!!

Dead on with those deep nails I had a 8” Indian with a rusty old nail in the same hole but those nails sound awful like a silver coin!

earthlypotluck,

Thanks for the tips. I'm swinging a 600 and have yet to find any silver coinage after about 20 outings. I'm hitting up local 100+ year old parks and some older sections of town with center grass medians, without much luck. I need to better understand the machine and search out those high tones in and amongst the trash signals. I think I move on too quickly from possible good targets. I don't seem to be getting the depth others speak of.

Thanks,
Dan

Great finds and I am finding that it is much better in iron than I initially thought. I fimd it amazing how the 11" coil works as good as a 7- 8" coil in the trashy areas.

Any time Dan. Not sure of your settings on the E600 or what headphones you are using.....As Felix mentions (thank you Felix for your kind words) I am becoming an Equinox Guru. I feel I am far away from that level but I keep learning as much as I can each time I go out. Not always, but sometimes on certain targets, I play around with and fool with my settings. What settings enhance the signal, what settings degrade the signal, what frequency "hits" it better, increase sensitivity, decrease sensitivity etc. If you can take sometime to do this at one of your parks I believe it will assist you in understanding your machine better. - Jim

I've been running Park1, Iron bias 2, don't recall the recovery # and mostly with auto ground balance on. I'll give Field 1 or 2 a try and try to sniff some high tones out of the iron. Thanks for the tips.
