Last day before freeze up #3? Civil war buttons....

Hello All,

Went back to the church/school site I hit yesterday and gridded it out with the WOT. Definitely been detected by others many times before, most of the signals were typical mixed with iron. Enough to hide from concentric coils but easy for the explorer to hit. Be worth at least one more pass someday.

Two IHs, 1896 V nickel and a 1913 Type II Buffalo.

Best finds were some civil war era buttons.

Did some research. Left button is an Infantry Vest or perhaps Cuff button. Backmark D. Evans & Co. Superfine; apparently a rarer backmark.

Right button is a New York State Button, possibly pre civil war. Backmark Silver'd Surface Warranted. This one I almost didn't get, was shallow and ID'd like a zincoln, luckily had another hit nearby that I wanted to clear the area to check out.

Too bad they can't talk.

Rain/snow mix tonight and then temps probably low enough to refreeze the ground. But if we get another warmer spell.....

But Govenor Dewey, being the pig headed person that he was insisted that "Foward" be the state motto...and after some time and bickering, Govenor Dewey got his way. Serving as Govenor from 1848 to 1852 Dewey also wanted the state Capital to be on the Mississippi river, but that never happen...long story short...Dewey died a poor and broke man, loosing is family and house along the way...

Nice hunt Chris. Like the button. Zincs are a nuisance but if I'm in an old area I dig them. I've gotten several Large coppers and other unique items digging zincs. Most times I pass them up too and I shouldn't.

Those Indians sure come out of the ground in your area in very nice shape. Congrat's on those Buttons also. That spot of yours is a good one and I think you should go back when you can with the smaller coil and see if there is anything else you may have missed due to the Iron and Trash. Congrat's again and Good Luck and HH.

Around here...I am only able to coin shoot. Relic hunting seems like it would be a whole different "thrill". Would love to try it sometime.

Have you gone over that spot with the stock coil yet? I took my stock coil out to spots that I've gone over with the WOT and was shocked at just how many obvious signals that the WOT will miss in trashy ground. Plus it stills go pretty deep, about 10" or so on most coins in decent ground.

Good luck!
Brian

I always forget that there are people that have a stock 8" coil. I just always assume that everyone has the 10.5" stock coil. I use it 95% of the time these days. The only time I strap on the WOT is in farm fields where I have lots of ground to cover and little to no trash.

You need to try it sometime. I figured digging Lead Bullets or Musket balls was going to be an OK thing to try but after you really find one and know that it has been sitting in the ground since the 1860's or was part of a known piece of Historical Significance, then you are hooked and you want to get out there and find as many as you can find along with Cannon Ball Shards, Buttons, and Belt Plates if you are lucky enough to find one. So give it a try if possible and you will see what I mean! Good Luck and HH.
